A Master Control Operator is a broadcast professional responsible for ensuring that television or radio programming is aired correctly and on schedule. They monitor the transmission of content, troubleshoot technical issues, and manage the switching of live and pre-recorded segments. This role is crucial in maintaining broadcast quality, adhering to schedules, and complying with regulatory requirements. Master Control Operators also log broadcasts and may perform basic equipment maintenance. Their work is essential for the smooth operation of television and radio stations.

What is a master control operator?

A master control operator monitors and records television broadcasts to ensure quality and compliance with government regulations. As a master control operator, your duties include observing and recording satellite, cable, or live on-air programs, and using technology to record, dub, or make other adjustments to the broadcasts. To pursue a career as a master control operator, you need at least a high school diploma or GED certificate and relevant work experience. Some employers prefer candidates with a college degree in communications, journalism, or a related field and technical skills training. Additional qualifications include attention to detail, technical knowledge to operate broadcast equipment and troubleshoot malfunctions, and the ability to archive and organize large amounts of media.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a master control operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Master Control Operator, you need a solid understanding of broadcast operations, signal flow, and video/audio quality control, often supported by a degree in communications or related experience in broadcasting. Familiarity with automation systems, broadcast consoles, and scheduling software is typically required, along with relevant certifications like SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineers) credentials. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work calmly under pressure are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure seamless transmission, regulatory compliance, and quick resolution of technical issues in live broadcast environments.

What are some common challenges faced by master control operators and how can they be addressed?

Master Control Operators often encounter challenges such as managing multiple live feeds, troubleshooting technical issues under tight deadlines, and maintaining broadcast quality during unexpected disruptions. Staying organized, keeping calm under pressure, and having a strong understanding of broadcast equipment are crucial for success. Effective communication with engineering teams and other departments also helps quickly resolve problems and minimize on-air interruptions.

Overall Job Purpose

The Senior Manager Delivery Lead is accountable for predictable, secure, high-quality delivery execution across one or more pods, complex initiatives, or multiple workstreams. This role drives delivery discipline, planning, and transparency at a broader scope—translating priorities into achievable delivery forecasts, managing cross-team dependencies, and ensuring delivery outcomes align to agreed scope, timing, and quality expectations. This is an influence-based, delivery-accountable role.

Key Accountabilities

  • Own end-to-end delivery execution across assigned scope, ensuring committed work is delivered predictably, safely, and in line with agreed objectives and quality expectations.
  • Translate priorities into delivery plans, sequencing, and forecasts; surface constraints early and drive timely decisions and trade-offs.
  • Establish and maintain delivery cadence and lightweight governance (planning, checkpoints, metrics review), improving predictability and flow over time.
  • Proactively manage delivery risks, dependencies, and impediments across pods, platforms, and partners; drive resolution and structured escalation where required.
  • Provide consistent delivery visibility (status, milestones, risks, forecast, dependency health) to stakeholders and enterprise partners.
  • Partner with enterprise stakeholders (Risk, InfoSec, Compliance, Privacy) to ensure delivery includes operational readiness, control alignment, and launch/transition planning.
  • Support delivery resource stewardship by contributing to estimation, capacity planning, vendor coordination, and delivery cost awareness within established guardrails.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, learning-oriented delivery culture aligned with ways of working and IGM values.
  • Participate in relevant chapter activities by sharing standards, tools, templates, and lessons learned to support consistent delivery practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or equivalent experience); advanced degree is an asset.
  • 7–10 years of progressive experience in technology delivery/program execution across complex initiatives.
  • Delivery planning and forecasting (milestones, sequencing, and delivery health).
  • Cross-team dependency, risk, and issue management using influence and structured escalation.
  • Stakeholder communication and transparency (status, risks, decisions, and trade-offs).

Preferred

  • Experience within the financial services industry, including banking, wealth management, insurance, or asset management environments.
  • Experience working with or supporting delivery involving:
    • Salesforce
    • SAP Data Platform (including SAP data management and analytics capabilities)
    • Salesforce Marketing Cloud
  • Experience working in a product operating model or pod-based delivery environment.
  • Proven success working with geographically dispersed and cross-functional teams, coordinating across multiple regions and time zones.
  • Agile certification (e.g., Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or PSM) is considered an asset

The expected annual base salary range for this role is $110,000 - $135,000, which is determined based on skills, knowledge and experience and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for annual short-term incentive, health and well-being benefits, retirement and savings plan, paid time off and career development.

Benefits

  • COMPETITIVE COMPENSATION & RECOGNITION: competitive base salary, performance-weighted bonus, education/career support, option to join Employee Share Purchase Plan with employer matching component.
  • EMPLOYEE BENEFITS & INSURANCE: competitive health and dental coverage, flexible plan for you and your family and short-term & long-term disability plans.
  • RETIREMENT SAVINGS PROGRAMS: voluntary Group RRSP enrolment with employer matching component.
  • WORK LIFE BALANCE: paid volunteer days, competitive time off including 10 wellness days off, WorkPerks discount program, hybrid & flex work arrangements.
  • INCLUSIVE CULTURE AND DIVERSITY: living our core values: Be a Team, Be Accountable, Be Better, engaging with community through Business Resource Groups (BRG communities are volunteer employee-led groups formed around a common interest, identity, or background).
