Purpose of Role

Under Armour's Innovation team is looking for a Professional, Engineer Simulation who will be responsible for delivering engineering assessments, design evaluations and performance-related insights for footwear products and components using engineering simulation tools, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA).  This position will use these advanced tools and methods during Innovation, Design and Development phases to accurately predict, compare, and improve the responses of game-changing athletic footwear and component concepts prior to physical prototyping.  The Professional Engineer, Simulation role will combine the objectivity and clarity of engineering excellence with the energy and passion inherent to the world of sports, and will accelerate the benefit to our athletes. Bringing refined innovation to market sooner.

Your Impact

Focus on the evaluation of concepts and designs of athletic footwear by using engineering first-principles and engineering simulation tools to influence and accelerate decision-making during the innovation, design and development of UA's future performance footwear product.
Within the scope and timing needs of each project and in support of defined product performance targets, this role will deliver engineering assessments and design evaluations for footwear products and components using engineering simulation tools, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA), while implementing established simulation test methods.
Confirm and seamlessly integrate the key ingredients to successful engineering simulations:
          1) a clear description of the team's product performance ambitions and the project's timing expectations,
          2) the complex material dynamics of elastomeric foams, thermoplastic elastomers, plastics, composites, fabrics that may be used in the product,
          3) the 3D CAD of the product's components and assembly,
          4) the athlete-derived dynamic loads, motions, and sport environments
Operate Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) software environments to create, edit, and manipulate 3D designs of footwear components and systems into a programmatic, virtual representation of real product that can then be cleanly and accurately processed numerically by high-performance computing (HPC) systems for subsequent review of predicted performance.
Define, assign, troubleshoot, and correct the engineering assumptions, 3D representation, material properties, boundary conditions, analysis settings, and HPC operations of simulations to deliver influential, timely, and accurate results.
Clearly communicate with Innovation, Design and Development teammates each project's progress, results, insights, design options, and material recommendations in an appropriate manner that assures team understanding, fosters open collaboration, builds trust, and accelerates decision-making.
Support, communicate with, and empower the testing activities of other Innovation Functions.
Creative thought partner to the broader Footwear Innovation team in exploration and refinement stages of product development.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of mechanical engineering first-principles
An understanding of non-linear polymer and elastomeric material mechanics and dynamics, and associated characterization test methods
Strong project management with adherence to established priorities
Effective verbal and written communication skills in English
Influential storytelling and explanation of concepts, such as with free-hand sketching, digital visualization, and/or verbal presentation.
Collaborative innovation mind-set, sharing passion and entrepreneurial creativity, strong self-reliance, and awareness of team interdependency

Required Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related professional field such as Aerospace Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering.
Up to 3 years of experience within an Innovation, Research, and/or Development work environment with the applied use of
o    Finite Element Analysis (FEA) predictive engineering of consumer product responses (performance and durability), and
o    3D-CAD to create and modify functional products.
Computer literacy (MS Office Suite, Windows OS).

Preferred Skills and Experience
Experience with the Altair HyperWorks Suite and with a SIMULIA/ABAQUS solver.
   Experience with SolidWorks and/or Rhino
Experience with programming using MatLab and/or Python
