In the United States, the most well-known are U.S. Marshals, who are part of the Department of Justice and play a key role in apprehending fugitives and managing the witness protection program. Local marshals may have duties more similar to sheriff’s deputies or bailiffs, depending on the jurisdiction. The specific responsibilities and authority of a marshal can vary greatly based on location and the agency they serve.
