What Does a Marketing Intern Do?

As a Marketing Intern, you’re tasked with a diverse variety of duties to glean as much as possible from a future career in marketing. While many of the tasks are administrative in nature, you’ll be part of several different pitches and contribute creatively to a project. You will help brainstorm and draft content, perform market research into new trends and outreach opportunities, attend meetings with various company stakeholders, and potentially manage social media accounts. Interns provide basic office support and customer service when needed, so you may help answer phones and greet clients. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the company’s marketing campaigns, and you may occasionally travel to help promote a product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Marketing Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Marketing Intern, you need a foundational understanding of marketing principles, strong written and verbal communication skills, and typically a relevant degree or coursework in marketing, business, or communications. Familiarity with digital marketing tools such as social media platforms, email marketing software, and analytics systems like Google Analytics is often required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams are essential soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for executing effective marketing campaigns, supporting team goals, and gaining valuable hands-on experience in the industry.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Marketing Intern typically expect to handle during their internship?

As a Marketing Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks that support the marketing team, such as assisting with social media campaigns, conducting market research, helping to organize events, and creating content for blogs or newsletters. Interns often gain hands-on experience with digital marketing tools, analytics platforms, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems. You'll likely collaborate closely with team members from different departments, such as sales and design, to execute campaigns and report on their effectiveness. This exposure provides valuable insight into the full marketing process and helps build foundational skills for future career growth.
