What is a cartographer?

Mapmakers, also known as cartographers, are professionals who design, create, and update maps for various purposes, such as navigation, education, urban planning, and environmental studies. They use data from surveys, satellite images, and geographic information systems (GIS) to represent physical and human-made features on maps. Cartographers must ensure their maps are accurate, readable, and tailored to the needs of their intended audience. Their work is essential for government agencies, businesses, and the general public who rely on up-to-date geographic information.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a cartographer?

To thrive as a Cartographer, you need strong skills in geography, spatial analysis, and cartographic design, typically supported by a degree in geography, GIS, or a related field. Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing software, and mapping tools like ArcGIS or QGIS is essential. Attention to detail, creativity, and strong communication skills help cartographers accurately represent data and collaborate with diverse teams. These skills ensure the creation of precise, user-friendly maps that support decision-making across various industries.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in digital map creation and maintenance roles?

Professionals in digital map creation and maintenance often encounter challenges such as ensuring data accuracy, keeping pace with constantly changing geographic and infrastructure information, and integrating data from multiple sources. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including software developers, GIS analysts, and field surveyors—is key to resolving discrepancies and implementing updates efficiently. Additionally, professionals must stay up to date with evolving mapping technologies and standards to deliver reliable, user-friendly map products.

What is the difference between Maps vs GIS Technician?

At Avride, we are a rapidly growing company at the forefront of autonomous vehicle and delivery robot technology. We develop cutting-edge autonomous vehicle solutions from the ground up, leveraging the robust technical expertise of our core team and over seven years of industry experience.
Our HD Maps team is dedicated to producing and supporting high-quality, high-precision maps for both autonomous cars and delivery robots. We actively collaborate with developer groups to determine the optimal map specifications that best represent the real world, identify the necessary tools for effective mapping, and ensure the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
Our most valuable asset is our people. With each team member bringing over five years of experience in HD Maps for autonomous vehicles, we work together as a motivated, efficient, and friendly team driven by a passion for innovation and excellence.

About the Role

We're looking for a detail-oriented Map Operations Specialist to own the quality and delivery of HD maps for our autonomous vehicles and delivery robots. You'll interpret sensor and imagery data to extract and verify road features, review map data against our accuracy standards, and act as the point of contact for map requests across the company. You'll also help shape our custom map format and the validation processes behind it - work that directly affects the performance and safety of autonomous navigation.

What You'll Do

  • Interpret imagery and sensor data to extract, verify, and correct road features - lanes, signs, signals, curbs, and crossings
  • Review map data against accuracy and consistency standards, and provide clear, actionable feedback on issues you find
  • Own the intake, triage, and turnaround of map requests from engineering, operations, and other teams
  • Investigate map-related issues reported from the field and determine root cause
  • Contribute to the definition of our custom HD map format, specifications, and quality criteria
  • Help improve mapping workflows and validation processes as the team and coverage scale

What You'll Need

  • 2+ years in mapping, GIS, remote sensing, or a similar geospatial role
  • Strong image and sensor data interpretation skills
  • Proficiency in QGIS or ArcGIS
  • SQL for querying and validating spatial data
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound judgment on ambiguous cases
  • Exceptional attention to detail and consistency across large data volumes
  • Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort coordinating with engineering teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience with HD maps for autonomous driving
  • Knowledge of geodesy and experience working with DTM
  • Python for geospatial data processing and automation
  • Linux environments, Git, and version control
  • OSM data and tools like iD and JOSM
  • Experience defining or enforcing data quality standards
