Mapping Pilot information

What is a mapping pilot?

Mapping pilots are specialized professionals who operate aircraft or drones to collect geospatial data for mapping and surveying purposes. They use advanced technology such as aerial cameras, LiDAR, or sensors to capture detailed images and measurements of land, infrastructure, or natural features. The data collected by mapping pilots is used in various industries, including construction, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and urban planning. Mapping pilots often work closely with surveyors, GIS specialists, and engineers to ensure accurate and precise data collection. Their work is critical in creating up-to-date maps and 3D models for analysis and decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mapping pilot?

To thrive as a Mapping Pilot, you need a solid understanding of aeronautical principles, geospatial data collection, and flight regulations, often supported by a commercial pilot’s license and relevant mapping experience. Familiarity with GIS software, aerial photography equipment, and drone or manned survey systems is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help ensure mission accuracy and effective coordination with ground teams. These skills are crucial for producing reliable mapping data and maintaining operational safety in diverse and dynamic field environments.

How do mapping pilots typically collaborate with ground teams and data analysts during a mapping mission?

Mapping Pilots work closely with ground teams to coordinate flight plans, ensure compliance with regulations, and address any on-site challenges such as weather or airspace restrictions. They also partner with data analysts to ensure that the imagery or sensor data collected meets the project's technical requirements. Effective communication is key, as pilots must relay real-time updates and adjust flight paths as needed based on feedback from both the ground crew and data processing teams. This collaborative process helps ensure the accuracy and efficiency of the mapping mission.

What is the difference between Mapping Pilot vs GIS Technician?

AspectMapping PilotGIS Technician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma, pilot certification, GIS knowledgeAssociate's or Bachelor's in GIS, cartography, or related field
Work EnvironmentFieldwork, aerial mapping, aircraft operationOffice-based, GIS software, data analysis
Employer & Industry UsageSurveying firms, mapping companies, government agenciesUrban planning, environmental agencies, utilities

Mapping Pilots primarily operate aircraft to capture aerial data, requiring pilot certifications and fieldwork experience. GIS Technicians focus on data management, analysis, and map creation using GIS software. While both roles support mapping projects, Mapping Pilots are more field and aircraft-oriented, whereas GIS Technicians work mainly in office settings with digital data. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

About Kinetic
Kinetic is building the modern service infrastructure for software-defined vehicles. Our technology-enabled service network helps repairers, insurers, and vehicle owners properly identify, repair, calibrate, and verify advanced vehicle systems.
Kinetic ID is our cloud-hosted SaaS application used by insurance carriers and MSOs to automatically identify the ADAS and safety systems impacted during collision repair. The platform leverages AI to determine what calibration, programming, and repair operations are required, then correlates that work with the specific safety systems installed on each vehicle.
Kinetic ID is already used daily by tens of thousands of claims adjusters and body shop estimators across the country, with multiple additional enterprise prospects actively piloting the software. As vehicles become more complex and ADAS-related repairs become more common, Kinetic ID is quickly becoming an important decision-support tool for modern claims organizations.
We are looking for an Enterprise Account Executive to help expand Kinetic ID across the U.S. and Canada.
For more information, visit www.kinetic.auto.
About the role
This is a quota-carrying enterprise sales role focused on building and converting a pipeline of enterprise opportunities for Kinetic ID. You will identify prospects, build relationships with claims, innovation, auto physical damage, estimating, and procurement leaders, facilitate pilots, and help move prospects from initial interest to scaled deployment.
The right person is commercially hungry, organized, comfortable selling technical products, and able to manage a consultative enterprise sales process. This role will require a mix of outbound pipeline creation, conference networking, in-person meetings, pilot coordination, contract support, and cross-functional execution.
You will work closely with Kinetic's product, operations, and executive teams to bring new carriers onto the platform and create a repeatable sales motion for future deployments.
Responsibilities
  • Build and manage a pipeline of opportunities across the U.S. and Canada, including small regional, mid-market, and large national MSOs and insurance carriers.
  • Identify and engage key decision-makers and influencers across claims, auto physical damage, estimating, innovation, procurement, and executive leadership teams.
  • Develop outbound campaigns, conference follow-ups, referral channels, and account-based strategies to generate qualified opportunities.
  • Attend insurance, collision repair, and automotive industry conferences to build relationships and create new sales opportunities.
  • Travel to customer headquarters and regional offices to meet prospects, present Kinetic ID, and build executive and operational buy-in.
  • Lead prospective customers through discovery, product education, ROI framing, pilot design, pilot execution, and deployment planning.
  • Coordinate pilots with stakeholders, including claims teams, estimating leaders, IT, procurement, legal, and compliance.
  • Work with internal product and implementation teams to ensure pilots are well-scoped, clearly measured, and set up for conversion into commercial agreements.
  • Create and refine a repeatable playbook for moving prospects from initial meeting to pilot, from pilot to contract, and from contract to scaled usage.
  • Partner with Kinetic's legal team and external counsel to support contract review, redlines, procurement processes, security reviews, and commercial negotiations.
  • Track all sales activity, pipeline stages, next steps, stakeholder maps, pilot status, and close plans in Kinetic's CRM.
  • Develop sales materials, pilot proposals, ROI summaries, conference follow-up decks, and account plans.
  • Gather market feedback from prospects to help inform product roadmap, pricing, packaging, implementation, and customer success priorities.
  • Collaborate with Kinetic leadership on strategic accounts, pricing strategy, and key enterprise relationships.
What we're looking for
  • 5+ years of experience in enterprise software sales, including demonstrated experience carrying a revenue quota and owning opportunities through negotiation and close.
  • Experience selling SaaS, data products, insurance technology, automotive technology, claims technology, or other B2B enterprise software.
  • Comfort selling into complex organizations with multiple stakeholders, long sales cycles, pilots, procurement reviews, legal reviews, and security requirements.
  • Strong ability to build relationships with senior stakeholders while also managing operational details with day-to-day users and pilot teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain a technical product in a clear, business-oriented way.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage many prospects, pilots, meetings, next steps, and internal workstreams at the same time.
  • Ability to travel regularly for conferences, customer meetings, and insurance carrier HQ visits.
  • High attention to detail, especially when coordinating pilots, tracking customer feedback, and supporting contract processes.
  • Interest in automotive technology, insurance claims, ADAS, AI, and the future of vehicle repair.
Nice to haves
  • Experience selling to insurance carriers, claims organizations, auto physical damage teams, or collision repair stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with claims estimating platforms such as CCC, Mitchell, or Audatex.
  • Experience selling products that require a pilot or proof-of-concept before enterprise deployment.
  • Experience working with legal, procurement, information security, and compliance teams during enterprise sales cycles.
  • Existing relationships across the insurance, claims, collision repair, or insurtech ecosystem.
Success in this role looks like
  • You build a qualified pipeline of opportunities across regional, mid-market, and national insurers and shop groups.
  • You help Kinetic consistently convert initial interest into structured pilots.
  • You create clear pilot plans with success metrics, stakeholder alignment, and defined paths to commercial deployment.
  • You help convert successful pilots into signed contracts and scaled usage.
  • You build a repeatable sales playbook that Kinetic can use to expand Kinetic ID across the market.
  • You become a trusted commercial partner to both prospective customers and Kinetic's internal product, legal, and leadership teams.
Location and Travel
This role can be based remotely, with a preference for candidates located near major insurance, automotive repair, or technology markets. Regular travel will be required for customer meetings, industry conferences, and internal team meetings.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary and variable compensation tied to sales performance
  • Incentive stock options (ISOs)
  • Health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Health savings account (HSA) available with company contribution
  • Flexible spending accounts (FSAs)
  • Paid vacation and paid holidays
  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities

The pay range for this role is:
100,000 - 230,000 USD per year (US)
