What is a manufacturing representative?

Manufacturing Representatives, also known as manufacturers' reps or sales representatives, are professionals who act as intermediaries between manufacturing companies and their customers. They promote and sell a manufacturer's products to wholesalers, retailers, and other businesses, usually within a specific territory. These representatives often work on commission and may represent multiple manufacturers at once, helping businesses find the right products while providing valuable market feedback to manufacturers.

How does a manufacturing representative typically interact with production and sales teams to meet client needs?

A Manufacturing Representative acts as a vital link between manufacturers and clients, frequently collaborating with both production and sales teams. They communicate client specifications and feedback to the production team to ensure that products meet quality and delivery expectations. At the same time, they work closely with sales teams to understand market demands and provide technical support during the sales process. This collaborative environment helps ensure that customer requirements are met efficiently and any issues are resolved quickly, making strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for success in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manufacturing representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Representative, you need strong sales acumen, product knowledge, and typically a background in business or engineering. Familiarity with CRM software, ERP systems, and industry certifications like Certified Professional Manufacturer's Representative (CPMR) are commonly important. Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help you effectively connect with clients and manage accounts. These competencies are crucial for driving sales growth, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining successful manufacturer-client partnerships.

Job description

SALES REPRESENTATIVE - B2B MANUFACTURING & ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT
DANIELSON, CT | FULL-TIME | 100% ON-SITE
BUILD RELATIONSHIPS. SOLVE PROBLEMS. GROW BUSINESS.
Do you want to make a difference every day? Would you like to build your career with a global manufacturer with a world-class approach to people, process and product? Then make SPIROL your new home and career.
At SPIROL, we work with our customers to help them succeed. From automobiles and hand and power tools to aerospace and green energy, SPIROL provides the engineered metal components and fastening solutions that literally help hold the world together.
We are looking for a proactive, relationship-driven Sales Representative to join our team in Danielson, Connecticut.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building customer relationships, solving problems, taking ownership, and turning exceptional service into long-term business growth.
This position is 100% on-site.
What You'll Do
As a Sales Representative, you'll take ownership of an established group of B2B customers while working to retain, develop, and grow those relationships.
You will:
  • Develop strong customer relationships and become a trusted commercial partner for customers in your assigned sales territory.
  • Proactively connect with customers to understand their needs, anticipate future requirements, and help secure repeat business.
  • Build relationships across customer organizations, including Purchasing, Engineering, Quality, Operations, and Management.
  • Qualify incoming sales leads and customer inquiries and determine the best course of action to secure and develop the business.
  • Identify opportunities for additional products, applications, and future business.
  • Prepare and follow up on quotes and customer proposals.
  • Perform Annual Business Reviews and ensure important customer information, pricing, requirements, and future demand remain current and well documented.
  • Work collaboratively with SPIROL's Sales, Engineering, Customer Service, Quality, and Operations teams to support customers and develop opportunities.
  • Resolve customer and order-related issues with urgency and professionalism.
  • Maintain accurate customer, opportunity, and activity information within our CRM.
  • Support customer forecasting and account planning.
  • Participate in customer meetings, business reviews, and occasional customer visits.

Who Will Succeed in This Role?
We're looking for more than someone who can "sell." The strongest candidate will combine the relationship skills of a salesperson with the organization, accountability, and follow-through of a great account manager.
You may be a great fit if you:
  • Naturally take ownership and don't need to be constantly reminded what needs to happen next.
  • Enjoy talking with customers and building long-term professional relationships.
  • Are comfortable proactively reaching out rather than waiting for customers to call you.
  • Are organized and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Have strong attention to detail and follow through on your commitments.
  • Enjoy solving problems and finding practical solutions.
  • Are commercially curious and naturally look for opportunities to grow a customer relationship.
  • Communicate professionally and confidently, both verbally and in writing.
  • Enjoy working independently while also being part of a collaborative team.
  • Are interested in learning about manufacturing, engineered products, and technical applications.

What We're Looking For
  • Associate degree in Business, Communications, General Studies, or a related discipline; advanced studies in science or engineering technology are preferred. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in sales, inside sales, B2B sales, account management, customer service, customer success, or business development preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer relationship skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality and accuracy.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Strong computer skills; experience with CRM systems and Microsoft Office is beneficial.
  • Ability to travel based on business needs and sales objectives.

Why SPIROL?
At SPIROL, sales is about more than processing an order. It's about understanding the customer, earning trust, solving problems, identifying opportunities, and creating relationships that last.
You'll join a global manufacturing organization where your work directly contributes to customer success and business growth-and where you can continue developing your own commercial and professional skills.
