Summary:
The Shop Floor Planner for the Coiling Department is responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordinating production activities to ensure efficient operations and on-time delivery. This role serves as the critical link between production demands and manufacturing execution, optimizing resource utilization while maintaining quality standards. The Shop Floor Planner develops production schedules, coordinates material flow, balances capacity with demand, and collaborates across departments to ensure smooth operations and exceptional customer service.
Responsibilities:
Production Planning & Scheduling
  • Develop and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules for the coiling department to meet customer demand and delivery commitments
  • Coordinate material flow and ensure raw materials are available to meet production requirements without disruption
  • Balance production capacity with customer demand and delivery commitments to optimize throughput and resource utilization
  • Adjust schedules in real-time to accommodate priority changes, equipment issues, or material shortages while minimizing customer impact
  • Monitor work-in-progress (WIP) and finished goods inventory levels to maintain optimal inventory balance
  • Sequence production orders to optimize equipment utilization, minimize changeovers, and maximize efficiency
  • Plan for capacity constraints and coordinate with management on capacity expansion needs

Coordination & Communication
  • Collaborate with production supervisors, maintenance, quality, and warehouse teams to ensure smooth operations and resolve operational challenges
  • Communicate schedule changes and priorities to production floor personnel clearly and in a timely manner
  • Coordinate with procurement and supply chain teams regarding material availability, lead times, and supply issues
  • Interface with sales and customer service teams on order status, delivery commitments, and potential delays
  • Participate in daily production meetings and provide status updates on schedule adherence, production performance, and key issues
  • Serve as liaison between planning, production, and support functions to ensure alignment and communication

Process Optimization
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve production efficiency, throughput, and schedule adherence
  • Analyze production data to identify bottlenecks, capacity constraints, and opportunities for improvement
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the coiling department using Lean and Six Sigma methodologies
  • Recommend process improvements to reduce waste, optimize resource utilization, and improve on-time delivery
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and production metrics including schedule adherence, capacity utilization, and cycle time
  • Participate in kaizen events and improvement projects to enhance planning and scheduling processes

Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate production records and documentation in compliance with company standards
  • Generate reports on production performance, schedule adherence, capacity utilization, and efficiency metrics
  • Track and report on production variances and root causes to identify systemic issues
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and quality requirements
  • Document planning processes, standard operating procedures, and best practices
  • Provide data and analysis to support management decision-making
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in production planning, scheduling, or manufacturing operations
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, preferably in coiling, metal forming, or related industries
  • Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) with advanced Excel skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with data-driven decision-making approach
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to collaborate across all organizational levels
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle changing priorities
  • Understanding of production scheduling principles, capacity planning, and material requirements planning
  • Ability to work 2-2-3 rotating shift schedule including day and night shifts
  • Physical ability to work in a manufacturing environment and walk production floor areas
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
  • Capability to work extended periods at a computer workstation
Additional Qualifications, Preferred:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, or related field
  • APICS certification (CPIM - Certified in Production and Inventory Management or CSCP - Certified Supply Chain Professional)
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Knowledge of coil processing equipment, capabilities, and production constraints
  • Experience with advanced planning and scheduling (APS) software or manufacturing execution systems (MES)
  • Familiarity with inventory management best practices including safety stock, reorder points, and ABC analysis
  • Understanding of finite capacity scheduling and constraint-based planning
  • Experience in furniture manufacturing, metal fabrication, or bedding components
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification
  • Knowledge of TOC (Theory of Constraints) or DBR (Drum-Buffer-Rope) scheduling methodologies
Work Environment:
This position is located in an active industrial manufacturing and distribution center with moderate to high noise levels, temperature variations, and material handling equipment in operation. The role involves a combination of office work and occasional walking through production floor areas. The fast-paced environment involves time-sensitive and safety-sensitive operations with a 2-2-3 rotating shift schedule including both day and night shifts.
Schedule:
2-2-3 rotating shift schedule:
  • 12-hr 2-2-3 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM (Night Shift)
  • Work 2 days, off 2 days, work 3 days, then alternate
  • Every other weekend off
Pay:
$16.85 - $20.22/hour (based on experience and qualifications)
