What is a manufacturing engineer?

A manufacturing engineer is a specialized engineer who improves product manufacturing processes. As a manufacturing engineer, your primary duties are to design and develop production systems and improve the tools and systems within the manufacturing process. You will use computer software such as CAD to create, modify, and test the products and manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges a manufacturing engineer faces in optimizing production processes?

Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing efficiency with product quality, minimizing production costs while maintaining safety standards, and implementing new technologies without disrupting existing workflows. They may also need to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with cross-functional teams, such as quality assurance and maintenance, to resolve issues quickly. Staying up-to-date with industry advancements and continuous improvement methodologies like Lean or Six Sigma is essential to overcoming these challenges and driving process enhancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manufacturing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and quality control, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications, and experience with automation systems are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you effectively collaborate and drive continuous improvement. These abilities ensure efficient production processes, cost reduction, and high product quality in a competitive manufacturing environment.

What is the difference between Manufacturing Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectManufacturing EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Manufacturing, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications like CMfgEBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentFactories, production plants, manufacturing facilitiesDesign offices, research labs, manufacturing settings
Industry UsageManufacturing, production, industrial sectorsAutomotive, aerospace, energy, product design

Manufacturing Engineers focus on optimizing production processes and workflows within manufacturing environments, while Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical systems. Both roles require engineering degrees, but Manufacturing Engineers are more involved in process improvement and production efficiency, whereas Mechanical Engineers often work on product design and mechanical system development.

How much do manufacturing engineers earn?

Manufacturing engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Salaries can increase with advanced skills, certifications, and managerial responsibilities.

Job description

We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join our team! This role bridges the gap between engineering and the shop floor — turning prints and customer requirements into efficient, repeatable machining processes for complex parts serving the aerospace and energy sectors. You'll work closely with machinists and quality control to drive continuous improvement across our CNC machining operations.

Responsibilities
- Develop, document, and improve manufacturing processes for CNC-machined parts, from programming through production
- Program and develop setups for complex, precision parts serving the aerospace and energy sectors
- Review customer prints, models, and specifications to determine optimal machining methods, tooling, and workholding strategies
- Create and maintain routings, work instructions, and time standards within our ERP system
- Partner with machinists and programmers to troubleshoot production issues, reduce cycle time, and improve first-pass yield
- Support new part launches, including process planning, fixture/tooling design, and first-article inspection
- Identify and lead continuous improvement projects (lean manufacturing, cost reduction, capacity planning)
- Investigate quality issues and nonconformances, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
- Evaluate and recommend new equipment, tooling, and technology to improve shop capability
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation and revision control
Qualifications
- Engineering degree (Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial) OR equivalent hands-on experience in a manufacturing or CNC machine shop environment
- 3+ years of experience in manufacturing, process, or industrial engineering within a machine shop or precision manufacturing setting
- Solid understanding of CNC machining processes — mills, lathes, and multi-axis work — from real shop floor exposure, not just classroom theory
- Strong blueprint reading skills, including working knowledge of GD&T
- Familiarity with CAM software and how programs translate to actual machine performance
- Experience developing routings, work instructions, or standard operating procedures
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
- Comfortable working directly on the shop floor alongside machinists, not just at a desk
- Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks or similar) a plus
- Experience with ERP systems
**Strongly Preferred:**
- Experience in low-volume, high-mix precision manufacturing (aerospace, defense, or downhole/oilfield tooling)
- Lean/Six Sigma or continuous improvement experience
- Experience with fixture design or workholding development
Schedule & Pay
- Schedule: Monday–Friday, day shift
- Pay: $60,000–$80,000/year, DOE, with large annual percentage increases
Why BG Precision Machine
- A shop that genuinely relies on and values engineering input — your work directly shapes what happens on the floor
- Close collaboration between engineering, machinists, and quality — not siloed departments
- Room to grow into a senior engineering or engineering lead role
- Fantastic benefits package
