Astemo Rock Spring, Inc. was established in 2000 and supplies aluminum knuckles to Honda and Subaru. We are in Rock Spring, GA, and operate on 3 shifts with 400 employees. We have three main manufacturing departments, Casting, Machining, and Press Assembly. We are part of Astemo, inc. with 90,000 employees worldwide.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

As a Mechatronics Engineering Intern, you will play an important role in the development of electronic and mechanical systems, assist with Continuous Improvement initiatives, and assist with the installation or modification of new and existing equipment. You will work closely with the Engineering team to design, develop, and implement projects to change manufacturing at Astemo Rock Spring into the future. As an intern your goal is to gain experience and knowledge to become a future part of the Astemo Rock Spring Engineering team and help us reach our goals in cost, quality, safety, and delivery.

  • Assisting in finding, testing, and implementing solutions for Automation within our organization.
  • Research Automation and Controls materials and best practices.
  • Understand and design wiring diagrams for new and existing equipment as needed.
  • Design and troubleshoot mechanical systems for manufacturing and automation
  • Design and troubleshoot both software and hardware necessary for control systems utilizing PLCs for integration of manufacturing systems.
  • Design HMI applications for continuous improvement projects, new equipment, or modifying existing equipment to improve our current systems.
  • Understand and assist in the development and design of PLC logic for Omron, Allen Bradley and Mitsubishi programming.
  • Assist in the troubleshooting of equipment in the electrical field where complex electrical problems are discovered.
  • Assist in the efficiency or quality of operations by recommending improvements when troubleshooting complex issues to help resolve reoccurring issues or prevent future failures.
  • Develop bid documentation and scopes of work for Electrical, Mechanical, Automation, and/or Low Voltage vendors to utilize in determining quotations.
  • Update and document specifications and operating procedures for new and existing equipment.
  • Interface and assist in the management of installation contractors during new equipment installations.
  • Support talent growth within our organization by teaching and training Technical Support members and other Engineers as needed.
  • Support the implementation of Internet of Things type systems and increased cloud-based connectivity of new and existing equipment.

  • Support environmental initiatives and work towards minimizing the environmental impact of our operations.

  • Collaborate closely with quality assurance teams to design and implement quality control measures in all processes, ensuring product integrity and adherence to high quality standards.

Delivery:

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth production flow and on-time delivery of production, contributing to efficient operations and customer satisfaction.

Productivity:

  • Identify opportunities for productivity improvements within the overall process, implementing measures to increase efficiency and optimize resource utilization.

Reporting:

  • Provide regular updates to the Chief Engineer on work progress, key metrics, and process improvement initiatives within the Engineering department.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Engineer to gather and analyze data for reporting purposes, ensuring accuracy and relevance.

Preferred Skills:

  • Self-starter, constantly looking for ways to improve or grow the company.
  • Strong willingness to learn and grow as an individual.
  • Ability to work as a team and collaborate with other team members, ensuring the success of projects and improvements on time and on schedule.
  • Ability to verbally communicate effectively between team members and management.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, HMI design, Controls Design or any type of programming is a plus.
  • Proficiency in using data analysis tools and software, as well as Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Solid understanding of engineering principles and technical concepts.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Minimum Experienced Preferred:

  • Working towards an associate's or bachelor's degree in mechatronics, electrical engineering or related field
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical data ensuring accurate decision-making and specification adherence.
  • Proficiency in using engineering software and tools for process design, simulation, and optimization, enhancing your efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials used in the automotive industry.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Enthusiasm to learn and willingness to take on new challenges.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Key Metrics Responsibility:

  • Monitor key performance metrics related to the overall process, including productivity, quality, cost of operations and efficiency, analyzing and interpreting data to identify areas for improvement and drive performance optimization.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, including standing for extended periods, performing physically demanding tasks, and occasionally lifting heavy objects.
