What is a manufacturing apprentice?

A Manufacturing Apprentice is an individual who is learning the skills needed to work in manufacturing through a combination of hands-on training and classroom instruction. Apprenticeships typically involve working under the supervision of experienced professionals while also taking courses related to manufacturing processes, safety, and equipment operation. The goal is to prepare apprentices for a skilled role in the industry, such as machinist, assembler, or technician. Most programs last between one to four years, depending on the complexity of the trade. Upon completion, apprentices often receive certification and may be offered full-time employment.

What are some common challenges faced by manufacturing apprentices during their training period?

Manufacturing Apprentices often encounter challenges such as adjusting to fast-paced production environments, learning to operate complex machinery safely, and balancing on-the-job responsibilities with classroom-based training. Time management is crucial, as apprentices must effectively juggle hands-on work, technical learning, and sometimes shift changes. However, with support from experienced mentors and a collaborative team environment, many apprentices quickly build confidence and develop valuable problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manufacturing apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of manufacturing processes, mechanical aptitude, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with safety protocols, hand and power tools, and sometimes exposure to systems like CAD or CNC machinery is beneficial. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help apprentices excel and adapt in dynamic production environments. These abilities ensure safe, efficient learning and contribute to quality workmanship and smooth operations on the manufacturing floor.

Job description

NO RECRUITERS OR AGENTS PLEASE
Manufacturing Craftsman Apprentice - Build What Others Can’t.

Cobblestone Millworks — Ball Ground, GA
Full-Time | Monday–Thursday | 6:30 AM–5:00 PM
Starting Pay: $20/hour → $22/hour after 90 days

Some manufacturing jobs are about doing the same task all day.

This isn't one of them.

Cobblestone Millworks builds custom exterior shutters, screen doors, storm doors, louvers, architectural millwork, and specialty products for projects across the country.

Dealers call us when a project is unusual.

Custom sizes. Difficult designs. Historic reproductions. Products other manufacturers don't want to build.

We build what others can't.

And we're looking for people who want to learn how.

You don't need years of woodworking experience.

We can teach you how to:

  • Operate woodworking and manufacturing equipment
  • Read measurements and drawings
  • Machine and prepare lumber
  • Run CNC equipment
  • Build custom shutters and doors
  • Assemble and finish architectural products
  • Solve manufacturing problems
  • Work across multiple production stations

What we can't teach nearly as easily is how you approach work.

The people who succeed here do three things:

OWN IT.

  • If something isn't right, you don't ignore it. You speak up.
  • If you make a mistake, you own it and help fix it.
  • Quality matters because your work eventually becomes part of someone's home.

STAY CONSTRUCTIVE.

Problems happen. Machines break. Materials vary. Custom projects create challenges.

We want people who look for solutions instead of simply complaining about the problem.

HELP THE TEAM.

  • There is no "that's not my job" mentality here.
  • If another station needs help, we help.
  • Great employees make the people around them better.

Build your skills — and your earning potential.

Every new shop employee starts at $20/hour.

Successfully complete your first 90 days and move to $22/hour.

Then keep learning.

Our goal is to develop employees who can work across multiple areas of the shop rather than being stuck doing one repetitive task forever.

Our craftsmen can progress through increasing levels of skill and responsibility, with a pathway toward:

$30/hour Master Craftsman

Advancement is based on what you can actually do, the quality of your work, your reliability, your ability to work with the team, and the value you create.

Work four days. Get three days back.

Our regular schedule is:

Monday–Thursday
6:30 AM–5:00 PM

That means a three-day weekend almost every week.

There are also occasional overtime opportunities.

Benefits include:

  • Health insurance — Cobblestone pays 50% of the employee premium
  • Cobblestone pays 100% of the employee health-insurance premium after 5 years
  • Monthly profit-sharing opportunities when shipping goals are achieved
  • 30-minute paid lunch every workday
  • 50 hours PTO after one year
  • 8 paid holidays annually
  • Annual compensation review
  • Training and advancement opportunities as the company grows

Who we're looking for

You may be a great fit if you're the person who:

  • Others can count on
  • Takes pride in doing things correctly
  • Enjoys working with your hands
  • Likes figuring things out
  • Wants to learn new skills
  • Can take coaching without getting defensive
  • Doesn't need someone constantly watching over you
  • Helps coworkers when they need it
  • Would rather solve a problem than complain about it
  • Wants to become genuinely good at a craft

Experience in manufacturing, woodworking, construction, automotive repair, cabinetry, CNC, machine operation, maintenance, or another skilled trade is helpful.

But character and willingness to learn matter more than having the perfect résumé.

This may not be the job for you if:

You are primarily looking for the easiest job you can find.

  • We have high standards.
  • We care about quality.
  • We expect people to contribute.
  • We expect people to continue learning.
  • We expect teammates to help each other succeed.

But if you're tired of being surrounded by people who don't care...

If you want the opportunity to prove what you're capable of...

And if you'd like to learn how to build products that most people will never know how to make...

We want to meet you.
