Manipulator information

What is a manipulator?

A Manipulator job typically involves operating robotic or mechanical arms to move, position, or control objects in various industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, or research. Manipulators can be manual, semi-automated, or fully robotic, assisting with precision tasks like assembling products, handling hazardous materials, or performing delicate surgical procedures. Operators must have skills in coordination, attention to detail, and often technical knowledge of machinery. Some roles require specialized training or certifications depending on the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manipulator?

To thrive as a Manipulator, particularly in industrial settings such as warehouses or manufacturing, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and experience operating machinery or materials handling equipment. Familiarity with forklift operation, pallet jacks, or automated handling systems, along with certifications like OSHA forklift certification, is often required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and time management skills help manipulators work efficiently and safely with others on the production floor. These capabilities ensure materials are moved, sorted, and processed accurately and safely to support smooth operations.

What does a typical day look like for a manipulator in a warehouse or manufacturing environment?

As a Manipulator, your day typically involves operating material handling machinery, organizing inventory, and working with team members to ensure production schedules are met. You might use lift trucks, conveyor systems, or other equipment to move raw materials or finished goods between workstations or storage areas. Working closely with supervisors and other departments, you help maintain an efficient flow of materials and promptly address any issues that arise. This role often requires adaptability since daily tasks can vary based on production needs and volume.

Job description

www.offworld.ai

Robotics Test & Integration Engineer

Based in Pasadena, CA

OffWorld is a robotics startup working on developing a mobile robotic workforce for heavy industrial jobs on Earth, Moon, asteroids & Mars. OffWorld was founded by an experienced engineering team drawing on decades of tackling formidable engineering challenges at NASA, ESA, NOAA, Maxar Technologies, CERN, Reaction Engines, SAFRAN, Surrey Satellites and Cisco. OffWorld’s first challenge is developing and maturing a modular robotic system for extreme environments on Earth. Our robots will go deeper underground and farthest on Earth than humans can, eliminate the need for humans to work in life-threatening environments in mining, construction, tunneling and other dangerous industries, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint and cost of operations in key economies on Earth and beyond.

We have designed a modular robotic architecture that focuses on maximizing the commonality and reusability across components for fast deployment and optimization. Our robotic systems combine sensor information, cutting edge classical/machine learning (ML) algorithms and a robotics real-time system platform for control, decision making and execution.

OffWorld is seeking a talented and motivated Robotics Test & Integration Engineer to join a fast-moving team working to create advanced robotic and space systems. As a Robotics Test & Integration Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and executing testing and integration activities. These testing and integration activities span virtual tests (e.g., simulation), subsystem and system testing of robotic platforms at both testing facilities and field-deployed sites (open pit and subterranean mines). You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including robotics engineers, software developers, and project managers, to ensure that testing, integration, and overall development goals are met to the highest standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Test Planning and Execution: Create detailed test plans, test cases, and test scripts, ensuring adequate coverage of all robotic system components and functionalities. Coordinate and execute testing activities, including functional testing, regression testing, performance testing, and stress testing.
  • Test Automation: Identify opportunities for test automation and develop automated test scripts using appropriate tools and frameworks. Continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of testing processes through automation.
  • Test Reporting and Documentation: Analyze test results and prepare comprehensive test reports, documenting any defects, issues, or areas of improvement. Maintain detailed documentation of test procedures, configurations, and test environments.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including robotics engineers, software developers, mechanical engineers, and project managers, to understand project requirements, resolve issues, and ensure alignment between development and testing activities. Communicate testing progress, risks, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in robotics testing methodologies, tools, and technologies. Identify areas for process improvement, propose innovative solutions, and drive the implementation of best practices.

As the ideal candidate you possess the following:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, robotics, or software / electrical / mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in (mobile and/or manipulator) robotics, or similar
  • 2+ years of hands-on testing of (mobile and/or manipulator) robots
  • Strong knowledge of robotic systems, sensors, perception, and control algorithms across software, hardware, and integrated-system development
  • Proficient in programming languages commonly used in robotics, such as C++, Python, or Java.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) or similar robotics middleware.
  • Experience with robotics simulation environments, such as ROS Gazebo, and scenario-based regression testing
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, git, docker, and Linux command-line operations and debugging.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities, with the capability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks based on project goals and timelines.
  • Ability to travel regionally and internationally approximately 15% of the time.
  • Self-driven, passionate, and constantly pursuing knowledge and excellence.

In a nutshell, we offer the:

  • Opportunity to sink your teeth into cutting edge industrial robotics problems
  • Opportunity to contribute to the mission of transforming how we mine on Earth today and how we will one day mine on the Moon, asteroids & Mars
  • Opportunity to work with a kind, brilliant and supportive team
  • Opportunity to join the OffWorld team if
    • You are as crazy-excited about the mission as we are
    • You’ve demonstrated you are The Right Stuff

Our benefits package includes the following:

  • Robust medical plan offerings with 0 to limited paycheck deductions
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off
  • 401K Match
  • Parental Leave

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
