Washington, DC
The Law Clerk III Senior Division of Enforcement Trilingual (English/Cantonese/Mandarin) shall provide legal research and litigation support to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Division of Enforcement. The SEC's Division of Enforcement uses a variety of data, including current, historical, and future information on sensitive public company data, mutual fund data, and trade/quote data.
Responsibilities
  • Assists attorneys with all phases of the litigation process.
  • Performs complex legal research for trial staff.
  • Reviews documents for relevance and privilege
  • Compiles case materials.
  • Assists in the preparation or prepares draft legal documents such as motions, briefs, and memoranda of law.
  • Organizes information for legal forms and documents, including complaints, declarations, discovery requests, responses, and other pleadings.
  • Conducts complex legal research and analysis for trial staff.
  • Reviews evidence, takes witness statements, and assists in trial preparations and investigations.
  • Provides English/Cantonese language support, including translating documents and correspondence as needed.
  • Assists attorneys and staff with Cantonese /Mandarin/English interpretation support during interviews, calls, and other case-related communications, as assigned.
  • Takes accurate notes and prepares summaries/minutes for meetings, interviews, and witness preparation sessions, including bilingual (English/Cantonese) notes when required.
  • May oversee the efforts of less senior staff and/or be responsible for the efforts of all staff assigned to a specific job.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Law Degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Passed the bar exam in one of the 50 U.S. States or the District of Columbia.
  • Minimum six (6) years of relevant experience, including litigation and trial.
  • Trilingual in reading, writing, speaking, and translating English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
  • Receive an 80% or higher on a HSK 6 Mandarin translation test.
  • Pass a recording evaluation in Cantonese to English and English to Cantonese.
  • Ability to provide a favorable credit history.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Professional proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and translating English, Cantonese, and Mandarin
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Proficient in legal software such as LexisNexis and/or Westlaw.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English and Cantonese, including the ability to translate legal and investigative materials accurately.
  • Ability to take detailed, accurate notes and produce clear written summaries in English and/or Cantonese and/or Mandarin while maintaining appropriate formatting and terminology.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements and quality-control practices when handling sensitive information and producing translated work product.
  • Possess exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess knowledge of federal and state court systems.
  • Possess Litigation and trial experience to include interviewing witnesses.
  • Ability to prepare legal documents; to interpret and apply laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Experience conducting legal research and knowledge of e-discovery procedures and resources.
  • Possess a keen sense of accountability and take ownership of projects.
  • Critical thinker who displays a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in preparing work product.
  • Ability to work effectively in an extremely pressured environment independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work concurrently on a variety of projects, flexibility in shifting focus.
