Job Summary:

The Sr. Manager, Health & Safety at UFA is responsible for overseeing and implementing comprehensive health and safety programs to ensure the health and well-being of 1,200+ employees and 60 Agency Partners in western Canada, and compliance with regulatory standards. We are a diversified growing cooperative company expanding into all Western Provinces through both acquisitions and organic growth.

This role involves coordinating and influencing various business lines that include agricultural fertilizer and chemicals, retail sales & warehousing, downstream petroleum cardlock and bulk fuel deliveries and construction to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement. The Sr. Manager, Health & Safety will have direct reports that are located remotely in the field and Calgary Support Office (CSO). This role is based at our Calgary Support Office.

Responsibilities:

  • Minimize corporate environmental, health and safety liability through effective implementation of UFA's Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS).
  • Maintain and enhance COR and assist Agency Partners in obtaining and maintaining their SECOR/COR registration.
  • Manage and develop health and safety performance metrics to senior management and field management via scorecards, reports and presentations.
  • Collaborate with other departments to integrate health and safety practices into daily operations.
  • Manage UFA 24/7 emergency response program
  • Set and develop departmental budgets
  • Support the operations with technical expertise to integrate EH&S into operations.
  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal health and safety regulations.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices and emerging trends in health and safety.
  • Manage and conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards, program gaps and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead a team of Health & Safety Advisors providing guidance and support.
  • Working with Learn & Development to develop, coordinate and conduct health and safety training sessions for employees both in person and via online courses.
  • Investigate workplace incidents and provide recommendations for preventative controls.
  • Manage third party H&S pre-qualification requirements, maintaining current client expectations and preparation of material for business line's tender and bid proposals.
  • Manage, develop and maintain UFA's Incident Management System
  • Manage, develop and maintain UFA's behavioral based program, which consists of ongoing training workshops and integrating program fundamentals into other systems, programs, and day to day operations.
  • Support and advise H&S aspects of mergers and acquisitions

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Certification in health and safety management (e.g., CRSP, CSP) preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a health and safety role, with at least 5 years in a managerial position.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices across the industries we serve.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, prepare reports, and make data-driven decisions for events and future programs.
  • Proficiency in using the latest health and safety management software and tools.
  • Regular travel will be required within western Canada to visit sites and staff (anticipated 20-25% travel).
