Job description

Position Summary: Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor provides support to the overall business but more specifically is a key member of the maintenance team, overseeing and managing the daily maintenance activities of the maintenance staff to ensure to ensure safe, clean, reliable vehicles, facilities and equipment in compliance with contractual, Company and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities: The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of the Maintenance Supervisor position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Maintenance Supervisor must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

  • Supervises the daily activities of maintenance staff including overall repair and daily servicing of the fleet to ensure they meet service requirements
  • Provides technical guidance and/or assistance to support quality assurance of repair work
  • Assists the Maintenance Manager in the overall operation of the maintenance facility through analysis of technical problems, planning and scheduling of work and maintenance of technical information
  • Conducts daily inspections of the facilities and fleet, including documentation of items related to safety, parking conditions, random inspection of buses for cleanliness and overall interior and exterior facility cleanliness
  • Directs the work of all maintenance staff, including the development of work orders and the evaluation of all repairs performed by mechanics, apprentices, electronic technicians and external vendors
  • Assists the Maintenance Manager in monitoring the Preventative Maintenance Interval (PMI) schedules and system honoring standards of client’s contract and those of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
  • Ensures all paperwork (e.g. repair orders and labour entries) are completed and processed in a timely manner
  • Assists in ensuring the operation is compliant with all laws, regulations and standards applicable including both client and company policies and procedures
  • Assists in the sourcing and procurement of repair parts and materials
  • Liaises with the Operations departments regarding fleet maintenance issues
  • Prepares projections as required by local, regional and corporate management for forecasting purposes
  • Assists in ensuring the operation is compliant with all laws, regulations and standards applicable including both client and company policies and procedures
  • Identify and recommend new ways to save money by streamlining business processes
  • Works with staff and management to monitor system performance through business reports
  • Assists with the develop standard operating procedures geared to ensure consistency and that service meets contract requirements and corporate policy and are documented properly
  • Identifies, selects, trains, coaches and manages the performance of department staff
  • Communicates clearly each staff member’s roles and responsibilities and provides support to help staff accomplish assigned objectives
  • Manages department attendance and absenteeism
  • Determines whether to discipline and applies discipline, including suspensions and terminations, according to company policy and in compliance with collective agreements
  • Participates in and advise management regarding labour relations strategies and relationships
  • Represents Company in grievance procedure
  • Respects and maintains the confidentiality of all employee records, business records, client and customer information, data and other information not otherwise available to the public
  • Maintains a safe work area and a focus on safety to reduce the opportunity for injury to self or other employees
  • Demonstrates regular and consistent attendance and punctuality in compliance with the company attendance policy
  • Works flexible hours and on weekends as required
  • All other duties as assigned

 

Working Conditions: The Maintenance Supervisor works primarily in an office environment with regular visits to the shop floor and may be called upon after hours from time-to-time by office employees or managers, in an emergency, or other reasons as required The job requires the following physical activities: sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, loading and unloading, typing, filing, answering phones and work at a computer keyboard and screen. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as required.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ supervisory experience in vehicle maintenance and repair in the transportation industry. Supervisory experience of a unionized work group in a different industry may be considered at the Company’s discretion
  • Experience supervising/managing in a unionized environment
  • Possesses a valid Truck and Coach (T and C) mechanic’s certificate, or equivalent experience may be considered at the Company’s discretion
  • A valid Automotive Repair (S) Mechanic’s certificate preferred
  • A valid G Ontario Driver’s License, preferably B with Z (Airbrakes) endorsement
  • Experience utilizing Trapeze software preferred
  • Be able to pass and maintain a clear Criminal Background Check

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of diesel engine repair, automotive electrical and air conditioning repair
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while exceeding established goals and objectives
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to set clear expectations, coach, develop and motivate staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical with a strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of client and service performance requirements
  • Ability to hold the respect and confidence of all employees
  • Ability to work independently and objectively
  • Ability to effectively delegate tasks and provide appropriate supervision and follow up to department staff
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software
  • Good working knowledge of applicable legislation
  • Knowledge of quality control methods and file maintenance procedures
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage with a “Safety First” attitude
