CAREER DESCRIPTION:

Performs routine unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual labor, in the construction and/or maintenance of water and sewer lines, meter repair, grounds and maintenance, water/sewer installations, and cross connections. Performs a variety of indoor/outdoor tasks, using some small hand-operated power tools and mechanical equipment. May operate trucks and other equipment to transport personnel and tools to and from work sites, and to load, unload, and move materials. (The use of an iPad, or other electronic devices, may be required.)


DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

DEPARTMENTS


Water& Sewer Installations/Repairs

Restocks crew truck with parts; assists with the repair of water and sewer lines; fills out daily reports or work diaries to record the number of loads excavated, moved, etc., and the number of hours spent operating equipment; performs various construction, maintenance, and repair tasks related to the operations of the department, such as installing pipes and constructing simple structures for protecting equipment and tools.


Easement Maintenance/Grounds and Maintenance

Uses a sling blade and bush axe for clearing sewer lines or utility right-of-ways; uses weed eaters; performs varied grounds and facility maintenance work such as cutting grass, repairing equipment, picking up litter and debris, sweeping buildings and grounds, and cutting or pruning trees and shrubs.


Cross Connections Controls & Meter Repair

Installs and replaces residential meters; installs irrigation meters; responds to emergency calls; installs and disconnects water service; assists the commercial meter replacement crew.


Water & Sewer Installations/Disconnections

Completes work orders sent by customer service; travels throughout the work day turning water on and off for new or existing customers; performs meter changeouts; works with electronic devices (iPad, GPS) daily.


Field Investigation/Infiltration & Inflow

Performs smoke tests, dye tests, manhole inspections, flow monitoring, and rain gauge maintenance; walks easement gravity mains; assesses erosion along access roads; repairs cleanouts and manhole castings; seeks overflowing manholes during periods of wet weather.

Minimum Requirements:

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK:

Ability to perform heavy manual tasks; ability to understand and follow simple written or oral directions; physical strength and stamina; communicates clearly; treats others with professionalism and respect. Must be able to read and write, and have some experience in heavy manual labor work, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.


THE PUBLIC SERVICE TRAINEE PROCESS

Step 1:

Public Service Trainee must work a total of 1,040 hours or more before applying for permanent classified employment under the Mobile County Personnel Board.

Step 2:

Once the Public Service Trainee has successfully worked 1040 hours within 6-7 months, the Public Service Trainee will be eligible to apply for promotion to Public Service Worker I, which includes a 5% increase in salary. As a PSWI, the employee will be on a 6-month probationary period in this position. Once the employee has successfully completed 6 months, they are eligible for an additional 5% merit raise.
