Position Overview

Announcement: Our organization is currently looking to recruit up to two full-time faculty members to join the Advanced Heart Failure - Cardiac Transplant Team at the rank of Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Child Health. This program conducts approximately 12-15 heart transplants each year, manages heart failure patients in both inpatient and outpatient environments, and operates a mechanical circulatory support program that includes a comprehensive range of pediatric and adult devices. The selected candidates will become part of our heart transplant team, which includes three physicians, five nurse practitioner transplant coordinators, a dedicated VAD coordinator, and interdisciplinary professionals in nutrition, pharmacy, social work, and child psychology. Applicants must possess an M.D. or equivalent degree, be board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics, and be eligible for medical licensure in Arizona. Candidates should have completed a three-year ACGME accredited fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology, along with an additional year of advanced subspecialty training in pediatric advanced heart failure, including the management of cardiac transplant patients and mechanical circulatory support.

We are looking for candidates who exhibit a strong academic focus, ideally in clinical and/or translational research, although opportunities in basic science are also available. Academic clinical faculty appointments will be supported at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix and Tucson, Creighton University School of Medicine, and Mayo Clinic School of Medicine - Scottsdale. Collaborative research opportunities are also available with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (tGen) and the Department of Bioengineering at Arizona State University.

The Division of Cardiology currently offers a fellowship training program in general pediatric cardiology, accommodating nine fellows over three years. Additionally, the Center for Heart Care provides subspecialty fellowships in pediatric cardiac critical care, advanced cardiac imaging, and interventional cardiac catheterization. The inpatient service includes a 48-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit and a transition care unit. Patient care is interdisciplinary, involving transplant cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and dedicated cardiac nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The role includes providing both workplace-based and didactic education to fellows, residents, medical students, and nursing staff. The successful candidates will join a team of 24 cardiologists, 13 cardiac intensivists, 3 cardiovascular surgeons, and 25 advanced practice providers. Inpatient pediatric cardiac care is primarily conducted at our hospital, while adult congenital inpatient care and procedures are also available at a nearby medical center. Ambulatory cardiac services for transplant and heart failure patients are centralized at the Center for Heart Care - Thomas Campus.

Key Responsibilities

• Patient Care Services

  1) Deliver patient care services for which the physician is clinically privileged, including but not limited to:

  • a) Provide direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings
  • b) Offer subspecialty consultations and follow-up care
  • c) Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic services/procedures
  • d) Provide urgent/emergent care as necessary

  2) Aim to achieve optimal patient and family-centered care

  3) Support the hospital's patient satisfaction goals as well as specific division targets

  4) Adhere to divisional standards for patient safety and quality of care

  5) Practice contemporary evidence-based medicine or the latest experience-based approaches

• Divisional Responsibilities

  1) Set and strive to meet annual goals and objectives for the physician, division, and hospital

  2) Contribute to the medical education programs and activities of the division, including but not limited to:

  • a) Direct supervision of trainees and allied healthcare professionals in delivering inpatient and outpatient services when applicable
  • b) Conduct teaching rounds, lectures, and conferences for trainees
  • c) Participate in the education and supervision of trainees and allied healthcare professionals assigned to the division
  • d) Engage in postgraduate continuing education activities within the division

  3) Support the division's research initiatives, including those led by other members

  4) Promote the programmatic growth of the division

  5) Assist with satellite efforts of the division when appropriate

  4) The following physical and mental skills are essential for the physician to effectively perform the aforementioned duties:

  • a) Ability to communicate via telephone, computer, or other communication devices
  • b) Capability to fulfill after-hours or night call responsibilities as needed
  • c) Ability to maintain a regular work schedule
