About the Role:

The Survey Crew Chief plays a pivotal role in the construction industry by leading and managing survey teams to collect accurate and precise land and construction data. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing surveying activities that support project design, layout, and construction phases. The Crew Chief ensures that all survey work complies with industry standards, safety regulations, and project specifications, thereby enabling successful project completion. They act as the primary point of contact between field crews, project managers, and engineers, facilitating clear communication and efficient workflow. Ultimately, the Survey Crew Chief’s leadership and technical expertise directly contribute to the accuracy and integrity of construction projects across various sites.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of formal surveying training or certification is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in land or construction surveying with demonstrated leadership responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in using surveying instruments such as total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors.
  • Strong understanding of surveying principles, mathematics, and construction terminology.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various job sites across the United States.
  • Experience with advanced surveying software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, or similar.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and construction site safety protocols.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Licensures, Certifications & Registrations:

  • Associate degree or higher in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or a related field
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license or equivalent certification
  • Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT)/ Registered Land Surveyor (RLS)
  • Certification as a Soil & Water Conservation Commission Level 1A/1B Inspector or Level 2 Design Professional
  • AutoCAD/Micro-station Inroads experience is a plus
  • OSHA HAZWOPER certification

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise survey crews in the field to perform topographic, boundary, and construction staking surveys.
  • Plan daily work schedules, assign tasks, and ensure the proper use and maintenance of surveying equipment.
  • Interpret project plans, blueprints, and legal descriptions to guide survey activities and resolve field challenges.
  • Collect, record, and verify survey data with precision, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to communicate progress and address technical issues.
  • Train and mentor junior surveyors and crew members to develop their skills and maintain high team performance.
  • Prepare detailed field notes, reports, and documentation to support project requirements and regulatory compliance.

Skills:

The Survey Crew Chief utilizes technical skills daily to operate and calibrate sophisticated surveying instruments, ensuring data accuracy critical to project success. Leadership and communication skills are essential for effectively managing crew members, coordinating with project teams, and resolving field issues promptly. Analytical skills enable the interpretation of complex plans and legal documents to guide precise survey execution. Proficiency with surveying software, Basic working knowledge of AutoCAD, and other surveying and office software. Experience with Robotic Total Stations and RTK/GPS equipment, specifically Trimble and Leica units, with TDS, Leica, and Carleson Data Collectors and software. Experience with mapping, and reporting tasks, streamlining project workflows. Additionally, problem-solving and organizational skills support the management of schedules, resources, and compliance with safety standards, fostering a productive and safe work environment. Having the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, clients of the company and to meet deadlines while working under stress and handling stressful situations.
