Job description

A globally leading consumer device company headquartered in Cupertino, CA is looking for Automation Engineer to join their team.
Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead automation projects for enclosure and module manufacturing, including machine design, vision systems, and controls.
  • Partner with engineering and operations teams to identify opportunities, develop automation concepts and requirements, assess cost and risk, and provide design-for-automation and manufacturability feedback.
  • Evaluate and select automation integrators, negotiate deliverables, and oversee proof-of-concept and detailed equipment design activities.
  • Manage equipment development through design reviews, controls and data-traceability reviews, issue resolution, and FAT/SAT qualification.
  • Provide onsite technical support during equipment testing, NPI builds, stress runs, and production ramp to ensure capability, availability, and productivity.
  • Coordinate with global teams and suppliers to meet schedules, mitigate risks, and communicate technical recommendations to decision-makers.
  • Lead advanced automation research, evaluate emerging technologies, and serve as the subject-matter expert on equipment capabilities and process drivers.
  • Travel overseas quarterly, with occasional domestic travel.

Key Qualifications:
•    BS/MS in engineering (mechanical, manufacturing, automation, mechatronics, robotics, or equivalent).
•    5+ years of experience working on automation and robotics applications for mass production applications.
•    Machine design expertise.
•    Experience designing, deploying, qualifying, supporting, and project managing automated manufacturing process lines that incorporate machine vision (including cameras, lighting, and programming), motion control (including actuators, motors, pneumatics) and sensors, with expertise in most of those component groups.
•    Ability to reconcile DFM feedback with design goals, anticipate risks, and identify effective mitigation opportunities.
•    Ability to drive root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and process optimization to closure using DOE practices, statistical methods—including process capability, correlation, and GR&R—and tools such as JMP and MATLAB.
Desired Qualifications:
•    Expertise working on vision-guided assembly, precision dispense, and laser welding applications in a mass production environment.
•    Expertise with one or more major brand six-axis industrial robots (Fanuc, ABB, etc.) and PLCs/IPCs (Mitsubishi, Beckhoff, Siemens, etc.) along with associated programming languages.
•    Expertise with motion control components, machine vision components, and sensors.
•    Extensive experience using CAD to review and design mechanical components and complex assemblies, and create proper engineering part drawings using GD&T practices.
•    Experience working overseas with international supply chains and contract manufacturers.
•    Fluency in Mandarin Chinese is a plus.
Type: Contract
Duration: 12 months with extension
Work Location: Cupertino, CA (onsite)
