What does a Manager RF Test Engineer do?

A Manager RF Test Engineer oversees teams responsible for testing and validating radio frequency (RF) components and systems, ensuring they meet technical and regulatory standards. They develop test strategies, coordinate test plans, troubleshoot issues, and analyze test data to improve product performance. Additionally, they collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams, while also managing project timelines, resources, and personnel. Their work is essential for ensuring RF products, such as wireless devices or communication systems, function reliably and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager RF Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager RF Test Engineer, you need a solid background in RF engineering, signal analysis, and test methodologies, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with RF test equipment (such as spectrum analyzers and network analyzers), test automation tools, and certification standards like ISO/IEC 17025 is crucial. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing teams and liaising with stakeholders. These skills and qualities are important for ensuring efficient testing processes, maintaining high product quality, and achieving project goals within technical and organizational requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by a Manager RF Test Engineer, and how can they be addressed?

A Manager RF Test Engineer often encounters challenges such as maintaining high testing accuracy under tight deadlines and managing the integration of new technologies into existing test processes. Effective communication with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, is essential to address issues quickly and keep projects on track. Additionally, staying updated on the latest RF testing standards and tools is key to ensuring both compliance and efficiency. Proactively fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the team helps in overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Manager Rf Test Engineer vs Rf Test Engineer?

Job description

Your duties
As a member of the Center of Expertise (COE) team, you will support customers and account teams across all regions in implementing cost efficient test solutions for electro optical devices-such as next generation, highly integrated SiPh/CPO transceivers-on the V93000 ATE platform. This includes working with optical and high speed digital measurement instruments as well as optical and electrical probing and handling equipment.
You will contribute to identifying and shaping emerging test requirements for electro optical transceivers, closely following industry trends such as the growing adoption of silicon photonics and co packaged optics.
You will design and implement test methodologies for the optical and electrical characterization of silicon photonics components and integrated circuits, building on and extending existing V93000 test concepts.
In close collaboration with R&D and Product Definition, you will help define economically optimized test solutions for electro optical transceiver devices.
You will prepare and support pre sales activities, including technical customer presentations and benchmark projects, together with account teams and sales.
You will actively contribute to the rollout of new V93000 electro optical test solutions to the worldwide customer base, supporting knowledge transfer and best practice sharing within the organization.
You will stay up to date with advancements in silicon photonics and optical technologies and continuously develop your expertise in this rapidly evolving field.

Your profile

  • Master's Degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or equivalent (ideally with the focus on optics/opto-electronics)

Must

  • Solid, hands on experience in automated testing of CMOS devices using ATE systems, ideally with prior exposure to the Advantest V93000 platform
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor test flows, test program development, and debug in a production or customer-support environment
  • Ability to translate device and customer requirements into practical, cost effective test solutions
    Strong want
  • Good knowledge of high speed digital and/or RF measurement techniques, gained through project work, customer support, or product development
  • Experience working within cross functional teams (COE, R&D, Product Definition, Marketing, Sales)

Want

  • Experience or strong interest in optical and electro optical measurements, including exposure to relevant test instrumentation (e.g., lasers, optical power meters, switches, attenuators, OSA, optical DSOs)
  • Familiarity with fiber and connector assemblies, probing and handling equipment, and test automation concepts
  • Working knowledge of Linux environments and test related programming (e.g. Java) and scripting (e.g. Python, MATLAB)
  • Understanding of silicon photonics concepts and devices (e.g., MZI, MRR, couplers), with willingness to deepen expertise in device behavior and manufacturing test strategies

Personal & professional attributes

  • Clear and structured communication skills, especially in technical and customer-facing contexts
  • Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving and debugging capabilities
  • Proactive, self driven, and willing to take ownership of topics and projects
  • Team-oriented working style in a global, multicultural environment
  • Openness to international travel (up to ~20%)

This position is well suited for candidates seeking to broaden their technical scope toward electro optical and silicon photonics testing while leveraging their existing V93000 and ATE expertise.
