Manager Project Manager information

What does a project manager do?

A Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and meet the required quality standards. They coordinate the efforts of team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Project Managers also identify and mitigate risks, resolve issues, and ensure that project objectives are achieved according to the defined scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a bachelor’s degree and experience in project management. Familiarity with project management software (like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are commonly expected. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and adaptability set exceptional project managers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering projects on time, within scope, and fostering effective teamwork.

What are some common challenges faced by project managers in balancing leadership and project delivery responsibilities?

Manager Project Managers often juggle the dual responsibilities of overseeing a team of project managers while also ensuring successful delivery of complex projects. A common challenge is allocating sufficient time to support team development and mentorship without compromising project deadlines or quality. Additionally, they must ensure clear communication across multiple stakeholders and resolve resource conflicts proactively. Balancing strategic oversight with hands-on project problem-solving is key, and effective delegation and time management are essential to thrive in this role.

Job description

Description

Ohio Machinery Co is seeking a Project Manager to lead a portfolio of cross-functional initiatives that improve operational performance, processes, and business outcomes.
This role sits within Six Sigma, Continuous Improvement. While projects may include systems or technology components, the primary focus is on process improvement, execution discipline, and the delivery of measurable business impact.

About the Role:
The Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and delivering complex projects aligned with business priorities. This role partners closely with leaders and cross-functional teams to define requirements, build realistic plans, manage dependencies, and ensure work progresses effectively.
You will provide visibility into short-, medium-, and long-term project pipelines, proactively identify risks and issues, and help stabilize or “rescue” at-risk projects. This role also reinforces standardized project and portfolio management practices across the organization.

What You’ll Do:
  • Manage a portfolio of moderately complex, cross-functional projects aligned to business priorities
  • Build detailed project plans, timelines, and resource requirements
  • Track progress, manage dependencies, and adjust execution plans to meet timelines
  • Partner with functional leaders to define scope, requirements, and success metrics
  • Communicate project status, risks, and trade-offs clearly to stakeholders
  • Identify risks and issues early; drive mitigation and resolution actions
  • Ensure adherence to standard project management practices, tools, and reporting
  • Support data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Assist in stabilization or recovery efforts for challenged or at-risk projects
What We’re Looking For:
  • Proven ability to manage projects from initiation through execution and delivery
  • Experience working on cross-functional initiatives in operations, engineering, or business environments
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective communicator who can translate complex work into clear, actionable updates
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across teams and influence without authority
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, operations, or related field (required)
  • 3–5+ years of project management or related experience
  • Experience supporting cross-functional projects with measurable outcomes
  • Foundational knowledge of project management methodologies
  • Exposure to process improvement or continuous improvement practices
Preferred:
  • PMP or similar certification (preferred, not required)
  • Experience in service, distribution, or operational environments
  • Familiarity with Lean or Agile principles
  • Exposure to project portfolio tracking tools or reporting systems
Physical Requirements:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. The work environment is typically quiet in office settings, with moderate to occasionally loud noise in other environments.
