Job description

STV is seeking a Project Controls Specialist II to join our growing Project Controls Department in our Boston, MA office. This position is ideal for an emerging project controls professional with 2-5 years of experience supporting cost management, scheduling, forecasting, reporting, and project performance tracking on transportation, infrastructure, buildings, and capital improvement projects.

The Project Controls Specialist II will work collaboratively with project managers, schedulers, cost engineers, and client teams to help ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with project objectives. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of project controls principles, including cost management, scheduling, change management, and performance reporting.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Cost Management & Forecasting

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of project budgets, cost reports, and forecasts.

  • Track project costs, commitments, and expenditures against approved budgets.

  • Perform cost variance analysis and identify potential budget risks.

  • Support earned value and project performance reporting.

  • Review invoices, pay applications, and supporting documentation for accuracy and compliance.

  • Assist with forecasting projects through completion and identifying potential cost impacts.

Scheduling & Progress Tracking

  • Support the development and maintenance of project schedules using Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or similar scheduling tools.

  • Update schedules based on field progress, project team input, and client requirements.

  • Monitor milestones, critical path activities, and project performance indicators.

  • Assist with schedule analysis, schedule health assessments, and progress reporting.

  • Support schedule recovery planning and delay impact evaluations.

Change Management & Risk Support

  • Assist with change order tracking and documentation.

  • Support evaluation of schedule and cost impacts associated with project changes.

  • Maintain project controls logs and risk registers.

  • Help identify emerging project risks and support mitigation planning.

Reporting & Analytics

  • Prepare recurring project controls reports, dashboards, and performance metrics.

  • Compile and analyze project data for client and management reporting.

  • Develop visual reporting tools using Excel, Power BI, or similar platforms.

  • Ensure project controls documentation is accurate, complete, and maintained according to company standards.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, construction managers, and client representatives.

  • Participate in project meetings and communicate updates regarding schedule, cost, and project performance.

  • Support implementation of project controls best practices across assigned projects.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Project Controls Department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Business, Finance, or a related discipline.

  • 2-5 years of project controls, scheduling, cost engineering, project management support, or related experience.

  • Experience supporting transportation, transit, infrastructure, construction, engineering, or capital projects preferred.

  • Understanding of project controls principles, including:

    • Cost management

    • Scheduling

    • Forecasting

    • Change management

    • Performance reporting

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.

  • Experience with Trimble Unity Construct, Procore, Kahua or similar Project Management systems.

  • Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM) concepts.

  • Experience with Power BI or other business intelligence tools.

  • Exposure to construction management, engineering consulting, or owner-side project environments.

  • AACE, PMI, or scheduling-related certifications are a plus.

Compensation Range:

$82,862.07 - $94,699.51
