Job Description

The Selective Wave Soldering / Wave Soldering Operator is responsible for setting up, programming, operating, and maintaining soldering equipment used in PCB assembly. This role is ideal for candidates with experience in SMT machine operation, automated soldering equipment, or electronics manufacturing, who are comfortable working with precision machinery and workflows. This position supports production by ensuring high-quality solder joints, consistent throughput, and adherence to IPC and internal quality standards.

Work Environment

Work in a large facility with multiple departments on the production floor. The environment is organized, clean, and quiet, although employees may occasionally be exposed to dust, solder, metals, high noise levels from operating machinery, or physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts. The culture fosters teamwork and a positive attitude, with cross-training opportunities available across departments to support skill development. The environment is louder during morning shifts and quieter in the afternoon. Employees will be part of a team of 50, with a dress code that includes wearing a smock, shoe covers, ear plugs, goggles, and closed-toe shoes. The shift schedule is 3:30 PM to midnight, with day shifts for training during the first two weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Load solder pallets, fixtures, flux, solder bars, and assemblies into the selective or wave soldering machine; verify correct tooling and configuration for each job.
  • Create, modify, or optimize soldering programs including nozzle paths, preheat profiles, conveyor speeds, and solder parameters.
  • Run production jobs, monitor machine performance, adjust parameters as needed, and ensure consistent solder quality.
  • Inspect solder joints, verify wetting, identify bridging or skips, and make real-time corrections.
  • Perform visual inspection per IPC-A-610; document defects and collaborate with quality teams to resolve issues.
  • Clean nozzles, maintain flux systems, check solder pot levels, and perform basic mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Assist with upstream or downstream SMT processes when needed (reflow, AOI, hand soldering, etc.).
  • Record machine settings, lot numbers, maintenance logs, and production data accurately.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years working as a machine operator.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills to perform product inspections and defect descriptions.
  • Organized and detail-oriented.
  • Quality focused with an eye for challenging the status quo and driving continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of IPC and other requirements identified (i.e., IPC-A-610, IPC J-STD-001, IPC-A600).
  • Ability to manage multiple activities concurrently in an environment with potential interruptions.
  • Able to distinguish different colours accurately.
