Job Description
Position Summary:
The Assistant Director of Wellness & Recreation will promote wellness and recreation on the DeLand campus of Stetson University. This individual will serve as the primary overseer of operations at the Hollis Wellness Center, including supervision of student staff, weight training spaces, cardio fitness areas, aquatics programming, SOAR (Outdoor Recreation), and open recreation activities. The Assistant Director will support and uphold departmental and University goals and mission, as well as the overall goals of the CLaSS Division (Campus Life and Student Success).
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Director with facility hours of operation, student staffing budgets, operational budgets, departmental goals, retreats, marketing, and other tasks as assigned.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate the professional development of more than 50 student employees based on established learning outcomes.
- Recruit, interview, and hire student employees for the Hollis Wellness Center and assist with this process for Intramural Sports.
- Oversee the collection and reporting of facility usage data for the Hollis Wellness Center. Manage a comprehensive assessment and feedback program that gathers input from students, faculty, and staff regarding services and communicate program changes, improvements, and limitations to stakeholders.
- Supervise the student SOAR Council and assist in leading SOAR (Outdoor Recreation) trips.
- Manage Hollis Wellness Center operations, including equipment repair, leasing and purchasing, copier management, and work orders. Collaborate with Facilities Management and external vendors to address operational needs.
- Oversee reservations for the Hollis Wellness Center made by campus partners and external groups, working in coordination with Intramural and Club Sports.
- Provide oversight of the aquatics program, including management of the pool facility.
- Provide CPR, First Aid, AED, and Lifeguard training to student employees as needed.
- Collaborate with the Summer Conferences Department to provide facility space for relevant summer camps, particularly those utilizing aquatics programming.
- Serve on divisional and University committees and participate in institutional initiatives as needed.
- Collaborate with the Athletics Division regarding facility management.
- Develop innovative fitness and wellness programs that are aligned with established learning outcomes.
- Remain current on best practices in campus recreation through NIRSA (National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association) and other professional resources. Participate in NIRSA professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current trends, best practices, and emerging issues in campus recreation, recreation facility management, wellness programming, and student affairs.
- Ability to supervise, train, assess, and mentor student employees.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, campus partners, and external vendors.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and program areas simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to maintain a valid Florida driver's license and operate University vehicles as required.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in student affairs, counseling, recreation, or a related field required; a master's degree is preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience in campus recreation or a closely related field.
- Experience working in a recreation facility.
- Ability to coordinate recreation and wellness initiatives in a higher education environment.
- Valid Florida Driver's License and an insurable driving record
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
- First Aid, CPR Instructor, Personal Trainer, Lifeguard, or related certifications.
- Strong supervisory, leadership, and coaching skills.
- Experience managing multiple program areas simultaneously.
- Experience with aquatics, outdoor recreation, facility operations, and student employee development.
- Active engagement in professional organizations such as NIRSA.
Work Environment:
Duties require physical effort, including standing, walking, bending, and light lifting; manual dexterity for the operation of office equipment; and extended periods of computer and keyboard use.
