Ocean Freight Project & Oversize Cargo Specialist – 77032
Location: North Houston
Salary: 60-65k
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Ocean Freight Project & Oversize Cargo Specialist with a strong background in freight forwarding, project logistics, and oversized/heavy-lift cargo operations. The ideal candidate will manage complex international shipments from origin to destination while ensuring compliance, cost efficiency, and exceptional customer service.
This role requires expertise in ocean import/export operations, carrier negotiations, project cargo coordination, and handling out-of-gauge (OOG), breakbulk, and heavy-lift shipments.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate international ocean import/export shipments for project cargo, oversized freight, and heavy-lift movements.
Manage end-to-end shipment operations including booking, documentation, routing, tracking, customs coordination, and delivery.
Arrange transportation for out-of-gauge (OOG), breakbulk, flat rack, open-top, and special equipment cargo.
Communicate with carriers, overseas agents, truckers, terminals, steamship lines, and customers regarding shipment status and operational requirements.
Review and prepare shipping documentation including:
Bills of Lading
Commercial Invoices
Packing Lists
AES filings
Certificates of Origin
Customs documents
Coordinate permits, escorts, and special handling requirements for oversized cargo.
Ensure compliance with international shipping regulations, hazardous materials requirements, and company SOPs.
Negotiate rates and service agreements with ocean carriers and vendors.
Monitor shipment milestones and proactively resolve operational issues, delays, or exceptions.
Provide accurate quotes and operational guidance to customers and internal sales teams.
Maintain strong customer relationships through timely communication and problem resolution.
Collaborate with project teams on large-scale industrial, energy, construction, manufacturing, or infrastructure shipments.
Maintain accurate shipment records and data within the TMS or freight forwarding system.
Qualifications
3+ years of experience in ocean freight forwarding operations required.
Direct experience handling project cargo, heavy-lift, oversized, or out-of-gauge shipments required.
Strong understanding of international ocean freight operations and Incoterms.
Experience working with carriers, NVOCCs, terminals, and customs brokers.
Knowledge of flat rack, open-top, breakbulk, and special equipment logistics.
Familiarity with AES filing and international shipping documentation.
Experience coordinating multimodal transportation preferred.
Ability to manage multiple shipments and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and freight forwarding/TMS systems.
