Job description

Full Stack Software Engineer Next.js
At Fortune Media, we are reinventing how a storied brand, steeped in journalism and business, adapts to today's digital-first world. The digital transformation of Fortune from a print magazine to a multi-channel media company is in full swing, and we want you to be a part of it. The Engineering team works on multiple digital properties at Fortune: from the editorial website, conferences, Fortune Recommends and others. Our goal is to launch new products to build on our core competencies of content, events and education, in order to diversify our revenue streams; and to improve the experience and monetization of existing properties.
Fortune Media is seeking a highly motivated and talented Software Engineer, someone who is a fast learner and eager to explore new technologies, to join our team and play a crucial role in shaping the future of digital media. You will be a key contributor in building and maintaining the high-performance, scalable systems that power our renowned publications, and you'll have a direct impact on driving growth for our business. This role offers a unique opportunity to leverage your expertise in Next.js, backend technologies, and Content Management Systems (CMS) to impact millions of readers worldwide.
AI-Driven Development
We are aggressively embracing AI to drastically improve the productivity of our engineering team and fundamentally shift how we approach application development. You will leverage AI-powered tools like Cursor to accelerate your coding, enabling you to:
  • Build stand-alone applications and internal tools for editors and team productivity in days rather than weeks.
  • Rapidly prototype new features by moving seamlessly from design tools like Figma Make to functional code.

Our goal is not just incremental improvement, but a step-change in productivity, allowing engineers to focus more on complex system design, business logic, and creative problem-solving. We expect you to be at the forefront of this AI-enabled coding revolution.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and Enhance: Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance software solutions using Next.js for our front-end applications, ensuring optimal performance, accessibility, and user experience.
  • Backend Expertise: Build robust and scalable backend systems that integrate seamlessly with our CMS and various APIs, supporting the delivery of dynamic content and personalized experiences.
  • CMS Integration: Work closely with our content teams to optimize CMS workflows, develop custom integrations, and ensure efficient content publishing across our platforms.
  • Data-Driven Development: Leverage data analytics and A/B testing to optimize website performance and user experience. Drive data-informed decisions throughout the development lifecycle to ensure all improvements align with business goals and contribute to measurable outcomes.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with designers, product managers, and other engineers to translate business requirements into innovative technical solutions.
  • Performance Optimization: Continuously analyze and optimize our web applications for speed, scalability, and reliability, ensuring a seamless experience for our global audience.
  • Innovation: Stay abreast of the latest technologies and trends in web development, particularly in the areas of Next.js, serverless architectures, and headless CMS solutions, embracing AI to remain at the forefront of innovation.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience building high-performance web applications using Next.js or similar framework.
  • Strong understanding of backend technologies and RESTful API design.
  • Experience working with Content Management Systems is a plus.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web development frameworks.
  • Experience with ads technology, DevOps, and automation tests.
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

We will tailor the specific level of this role (e.g., Software Engineer I, II, Senior, Lead, Principle, etc.) based on years of relevant experience, your demonstrated technical expertise, experience with large-scale system design, leadership qualities, and communication skills as assessed during the interview process.
A few of Fortune's perks and benefits:
  • 20 vacation days and 2 personal days on top of 11 company holidays and an honor-based sick leave policy
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage (90% paid for individuals and families), along with flexible spending accounts where Fortune contributes to your HSA
  • 401(k) plan
  • Generous parental leave
  • Dependent care, commuter, and cell phone benefits
  • Tuition reimbursement program
  • A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work culture

Location:
This role will be based in NYC with 5 days/week in the office.
If you are a passionate software engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to contribute to the future of digital media, we encourage you to apply!
