Manager Microgrid Engineer information

What does a manager microgrid engineer do?

A Manager Microgrid Engineer oversees the design, development, and implementation of microgrid systems, which are localized energy grids that can operate independently or in conjunction with the main power grid. They lead engineering teams, manage projects, and ensure that microgrid solutions meet technical, regulatory, and sustainability requirements. Additionally, they often coordinate with clients, stakeholders, and other departments to ensure successful project delivery and optimal system performance.

What are some common challenges faced by manager microgrid engineers in overseeing project implementation?

Manager Microgrid Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating multidisciplinary teams, balancing project timelines with regulatory requirements, and ensuring seamless integration of diverse energy resources. They must also address technical complexities in system design, manage stakeholder expectations, and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies. Strong communication and project management skills are essential for overcoming these challenges and delivering reliable, efficient microgrid solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager microgrid engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager Microgrid Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, power systems, and project management, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree and Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Familiarity with SCADA systems, grid simulation software (such as ETAP or HOMER), and renewable energy integration is typically required. Leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills are crucial for managing teams and coordinating multidisciplinary projects. These competencies ensure the successful design, implementation, and operation of efficient, reliable microgrid solutions in evolving energy markets.

Job Title: Cloud & Network Engineer

Job Description:

Trystar is at the forefront of advancing electrical power solutions, charged and driven by a committed, dynamic team, tackling complex challenges, and creating innovative solutions. Safety and integrity aren’t just buzzwords. They are the north star guiding us as we aspire to wow our customers every day. We’ve created power solutions that are not only durable and unique but also the result of serious teamwork from every corner of our organization. Individually and collectively, every team member at Trystar plays for each other and strives to deliver unmatched value at scale and 100% accuracy to our customers every single day.

As a big name and pioneer in electrical power solutions, we’re not just part of the power conversation – we’re shaping its future, and we’re doing so across diverse industry sectors including healthcare, data centers, entertainment, education, government, and commercial construction – just to name a few! We’re committed to growing and evolving our product lineup to stay on top of the game and that includes leaning into sustainable, resilient, and renewable energy solutions.

Our cutting-edge headquarters in Faribault, MN, is partially solar- and wind-powered by our own microgrid! You will find that we’re also pushing boundaries across the country at our additional facilities in Troy, MI; Houston, TX; Merrimack, NH; Burnsville, MN; Murfreesboro, TN; Waukesha, WI; Charlotte, NC; Mayfield, KY; Loveland, CO; and in Montreal, Québec, Canada. Together, we are Trystar, where we power the future and nurture innovation for a brighter tomorrow.

Trystar’s team members are our most important asset, and we are looking for a highly skilled Cloud & Network Engineer to lead the design, implementation, standardization, and execution of our hybrid cloud infrastructure. This role is responsible for defining Azure architecture patterns, driving cloud-first adoption, and ensuring scalable, secure, and cost-effective platform operations.

The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on engineering capability with solid architectural judgement – able to design solutions, set standards, and execute at a high level. While experience with enterprise networking is required, this role is primarily focused on advancing our Azure platform and hybrid connectivity strategy.

We are looking for people who believe in our guiding principles and values of:

  • Safety – We believe everyone should leave Trystar facilities in the same or better condition than when they arrived.
  • Integrity – We’re honest, transparent, and committed to doing what’s right.
  • Customer focus – We have relentless focus on our customers and their success.
  • Right with speed – We use good judgement, make thoughtful decisions quickly, and execute them with purpose and intensity.
  • Play for each other – We’re a team. We show up for each other and we know that through teamwork we achieve greatness.
  • Champion change – We know adaptation and improvement are requirements to survive and to thrive.
  • Enjoy the journey – We create an environment where our team feels appreciated and has fun along the way.

In this role you will get to:

Cloud Infrastructure (Azure Platform & Architecture):

  • Own the design and evolution of Azure architecture across networking, identity, compute, storage, and security.
  • Lead cloud-first decision making for infrastructure and application hosting.
  • Drive adoption of automated infrastructure using PowerShell, Azure CLI, ARM/Bicep or similar tools.
  • Partner with development and data teams to support cloud-native solutions.
  • Lead migration of workloads from on-prem to Azure.
  • Implement and maintain hybrid connectivity to Azure (e.g site-to-site VPN and/or private connectivity), ensuring performance, resiliency, and security.
  • Build operational excellence: Establish and enforce governance standards including monitoring/alerting, logging, cost management, and controls related to network and connectivity.

Hybrid Connectivity & Networking:

  • Design and support hybrid connectivity between on-prem environments and Azure.
  • Ensure enterprise network aligns with cloud-first strategy.
  • Maintain core networking capabilities as needed.
  • Oversee firewall policies and connectivity standards.
  • Own LAN/WAN design: VLANs, routing, QoS, segmentation, redundancy, and secure remote access.
  • Lead lifecycle planning (standardization, refresh, firmware/patch cadence) and maintain accurate network documentation (topology, configs, runbooks).
  • Monitor network performance and reliability; troubleshoot complex issues across LAN/WAN/WLAN, ISP, and inter-site connectivity.

Platform Reliability, Security & Operations:

  • Own platform reliability including monitoring, alerting, and performance optimization.
  • Implement security best practices across cloud and network environments.
  • Support disaster recovery planning and execution.
  • Provide escalation support and mentor team members.

Job Requirements:

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in cloud engineering and network administration in enterprise environments with firewalls, switching, routing, and wireless and a strong focus on Azure.
  • Deep experience with Azure networking, identity, compute, and storage.
  • Experience with network monitoring/management tools and troubleshooting methodologies (packet capture, log analysis, root cause).
  • Experience with hybrid connectivity (VPN, SD-WAN, ExpressRoute)
  • Azure certifications are strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP, VLANs, routing protocols, and firewall rules.
  • Experience with network monitoring and management tools.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and documentation abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.
