Job description

5K Specialty Systems

Position: Lighting Controls Specialist

Location: Austin, TX / Hybrid

Reports To: Solutions Architect, 5K Specialty Systems

Employment Type: Full-Time

5K Specialty Systems is a low-voltage systems and building automation company delivering structured cabling, security and access control, audio/visual, and BAS integration solutions for commercial, industrial, and specialty facilities. Part of the 5K Holdings family, 5K Specialty Systems is built on a foundation of technical precision, reliability, and client focus — delivering systems that perform.

Position Summary

The Lighting Controls Specialist is a sales engineer specializing in lighting control systems, supporting the sales effort with technical design, cost estimating, and direct client communication on lighting controls opportunities. This role designs lighting control solutions to meet client requirements and applicable energy code, develops supporting cost estimates, and articulates technical lighting controls details to clients and prospects in a way that builds confidence and helps win business.

Key Responsibilities

• Design lighting control solutions — including device selection, zoning, and sequences — to meet client requirements and applicable energy code (e.g., ASHRAE 90.1, IECC) on sales opportunities

• Develop cost estimates for lighting controls scope within proposals, in coordination with the Estimator

• Present and articulate technical lighting controls solution details directly to clients and prospects during the sales process

• Partner with Account Managers, the BDM, and the Solutions Architect on opportunities requiring lighting-controls-specific technical expertise

• Respond to RFP/RFI technical questions specific to lighting controls scope

• Stay current on lighting controls products, platforms, and energy code requirements relevant to client solutions

• Support proposal development with technically accurate, clearly communicated lighting controls content

Qualifications & Skills

Required

• 4+ years of experience in lighting controls design, sales engineering, or a related pre-sale technical role

• Demonstrated ability to design lighting control solutions and develop supporting cost estimates

• Strong client-facing communication and presentation skills — able to explain technical lighting controls concepts clearly to non-technical audiences

• Working knowledge of major lighting controls platforms (e.g., Lutron, WattStopper, Douglas Lighting Controls)

• Knowledge of applicable energy code requirements for lighting controls (e.g., ASHRAE 90.1, IECC)

Preferred

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field

• Prior experience in a sales engineering or pre-sale technical role

• Lighting Certified (LC) credential or similar industry certification

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role splits time between office-based design and estimating work and client-facing sales support, with travel (approximately 20–30%) for client meetings, proposal presentations, and site walkthroughs to support the sales effort. The Lighting Controls Specialist must be able to operate a computer and standard office equipment and occasionally access active construction or installation sites requiring basic site safety awareness.
