Overview:

The New Product & Mechanical Design Engineer leads the mechanical design and development of new products and enhancements to existing products from concept through production. This role also provides engineering support for existing manufacturing processes and equipment, product documentation, supplier collaboration, and continuous improvement initiatives.

At Classic Instruments, we live by a simple philosophy: We build it better—or we don’t build it. Every gauge is proudly designed, assembled, and calibrated in Boyne City, MI. Our products are crafted by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts, and are featured in some of the most respected custom builds in the industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead new product design projects, including weekly meetings, timelines, open-item tracking, and cross-functional follow-up.
  • Develop mechanical designs for products and components, including circuit board packaging, lighting assemblies, assembly fixtures, gauges, and custom applications.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and manufacturing files using SolidWorks.
  • Create and maintain Bills of Materials, SOPs, assembly instructions, revision-controlled files, and other manufacturing documentation.
  • Support prototype builds, new product introductions, production launches, and manufacturing team training.
  • Provide engineering support for existing manufacturing processes and equipment, including troubleshooting, process improvements, tooling or fixture updates, and equipment-related technical issues.
  • Partner with Manufacturing and Quality to resolve design, component, documentation, equipment, and production concerns.
  • Work with suppliers to develop specifications, drawings, and CAD files for purchased components.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and Marketing to provide technical product information and sales-support assets.
  • Drive continuous improvement of existing products, components, manufacturing processes, and equipment.
  • Provide technical support to Custom Designers, including the use of laser equipment, 3D printers, and other design or prototyping resources.
  • Support special projects, including complex custom-built gauges for high-end customers.
What You Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Three or more years of experience in mechanical design, product development, or manufacturing engineering.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including 3D modeling and engineering drawing development.
  • Experience with BOMs, manufacturing documentation, revision control, and engineering changes.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing processes, production equipment, tooling, or fixtures.
  • Strong project-management, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with electromechanical products, lighting assemblies, gauges, instrumentation, or printed circuit board packaging.
  • Experience with 3D printing, laser equipment, prototyping, and new product introduction.
  • Experience troubleshooting or improving manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Experience working with suppliers or supporting automotive aftermarket products.
