Primary Responsibilities

We are looking for an Accounting Manager in our Anchorage, Alaska office.  This position will report to the Assistant Regional Accounting Director and collaborate closely with the Alaska Area Manager.  In addition to an individual that possesses analytical skills, this individual must also possess leadership and management skills necessary to effectively orchestrate accounting support activities for a variety of operational driven processes and initiatives.

This position will be responsible for organizing and directing core accounting activities as well as assisting both the Area Manager with specialized duties as assigned below.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Work directly with the Area Manager and Regional Leadership to analyze and explain the underlying reasons and implications for current financial results, metrics, KPI's, and trends
  • Effectively manage, mentor and support a team of project accountants with project accounting and costing, client invoicing, interpreting and adhering to contractual terms, accounts receivable review and collections, ensure amendments and cost budgets are updated in our financial system in a timely manner
  • Partner with Area Manager to analyze and support the monthly forecasting and annual budgeting processes including ad hoc analysis and reporting
  • Review, report and support monthly revenue recognition and closing process.
  • Monitor project budgets, general ledger, invoicing, payables, receivables, collection comments and other related financial information
  • Perform specialized accounting functions and establish internal controls to ensure procedures and practices are in accordance with HDR policies, HDR accounting procedures and contractual client obligations
  • Liaise with Internal and Quality Audit staff
  • Respond to project-financial requests from Area Manager and Regional Leadership as needed
  • Manage processing, payment and reconciliations of Accounts Payable for area overhead costs
  • Communicate and correspond directly with clients with respect to invoicing, receivables and project related reporting as needed
  • Attend and participate in Project/Business Reviews
  • Ensure timesheets are following timekeeping policies against corporate reporting metrics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required; preferably in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience; an advanced degree may offset years of experience
  • Present a demeanor, approach and attitude that focuses on customers service, create a respectful and effective work environment and be committed and an active participant in our employee-owned culture
  • Professional maturity and the ability to comfortably communicate and collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization and appropriately handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Flexibility and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and collaborate with various managers
  • Highly proficient with MS Office applications, Oracle experience is a plus
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles is a must, preferably (but not required) with project accounting experience in Architectural/Engineering industry
  • Must be self-motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented and able to manage others

  • Bachelor's degree in a closely related field or combination of education and relevant experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience; an advanced degree may offset years of experience
  • Proficiency with MS Office including Word and Outlook
  • Excellent verbal and written communication including grammar, punctuation, proofreading, spelling and telephone skills
  • Flexibility and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and collaborate with various managers in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated, well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to handle confidential information
