Leadership Opportunity in Advanced Materials for Medical Devices within BD's Material Science and Shared Services (MSSI) Organization
Position Summary
The Senior Manager will play a pivotal role in shaping and advancing BD's materials science strategy as part of the MSSI organization, supporting the medical device sector across the company's diverse portfolio. This position is responsible for leading multidisciplinary teams, managing complex projects, and driving innovation in material development and testing that directly impacts BD's global product lines. The successful candidate will act as a key influencer within MSSI and across BD, ensuring alignment with Advancing The World Of Health and delivering impactful results that support business growth, operational excellence, and product quality.
Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Team Development: Lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams of scientists, engineers, and technical staff within MSSI. Develop a collaborative and accountable culture that encourages innovation, continuous learning, and professional growth in alignment with BD's core values.
  • Material Science Program Oversight: Oversee material selection, development, and qualification for BD medical devices, ensuring compliance with industry standards, internal policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Stakeholder Management (360-Degree): Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including R&D, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and external partners throughout BD. Influence without direct authority and manage cross-functional priorities in a matrixed global environment.
  • Project and Resource Management: Direct and prioritize multiple projects and initiatives within MSSI, allocate resources effectively, and ensure timely delivery of milestones in support of BD's strategic goals. Demonstrate agility in responding to evolving business needs.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide hands-on guidance in the design and execution of laboratory experiments, analytical testing, and mechanical characterization using a broad range of advanced techniques relevant to BD's product platforms.
  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the long-term vision and strategic planning for material innovation and organizational capability building within MSSI, supporting BD's mission to advance the world of health.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering with a Material Focus, or other chemistry science major.
  • Experience: Minimum of 12 years post-graduate experience in a chemical or material-related field. Demonstrated expertise in leading material science initiatives, preferably within the medical device industry.
  • Leadership: Proven record of leading teams (6 - 8 headcount) and material organizations, including at least 3 years of functional management experience.
  • Matrix Organization Exposure: Experience working and influencing in a strong matrix organization structure.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Ability to manage and influence stakeholders at all organizational levels (360-degree management).
  • Laboratory and Technical Skills: Hands-on experience with a variety of analytical and mechanical testing techniques, including but not limited to: HPLC, DMA, TGA, FTIR, DSC, Instron, AFM, EDX, SEM, XPS, Goniometer, Tensiometer, GPC, ICP-MS, Atomic Absorption, Cyclic Voltammetry, Liquid-Liquid Extraction, NMR, Dynamic and Static Light Scattering, Rheology, and Hansen Solubility Parameters.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience in the medical device sector.
  • Track record of success in a strongly matrixed organization.
  • Advanced laboratory management and technical troubleshooting skills.
  • Track record of publications in Graduate School and patents or peer review literature in industrial experience.
  • Graduate with Ph.D. from a top 20 University based on US News Ranking or World University Ranking over the past 5 years in their disciplines.
