With the Hilltop Campus located in the heart of the historic Georgetown neighborhood, and the Capitol Campus, just minutes from the U.S. Capitol and U.S. Supreme Court, Georgetown University offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, and unparalleled opportunities to engage with Washington, D.C. Our community is a close-knit group of remarkable individuals driven by intellectual inquiry, a commitment to social justice, and a shared dedication to making a difference in the world.

Requirements Job Overview

The Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality (GCPI) is seeking a Director of Editorial Strategy to help shape how the Center translates research, policy, and lived experiences into persuasive, accessible, and influential products.

Working across the center, the Director of Editorial Strategy, will guide the development of editorial products and strategies that strengthen GCPI’s ability to inform policy, shape public conversations, and advance its mission.

GCPI is working to strengthen public understanding of poverty, affordability, caregiving, and economic opportunity by producing work that is rigorous, practical, and usable.

The Director of Editorial Strategy will play a critical role in ensuring that GCPI’s ideas reach and resonate with policymakers, practitioners, philanthropy, media, and broader audiences.

This role sits at the intersection of policy, narrative, and strategy, helping transform complex ideas into clear, compelling, and people-centered products—including publications, data & analytical tools, events, convenings, speeches, video explainers, and educational materials that inform decisions and shape conversations.

Work Interactions

The Director of Editorial Strategy reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Managing Director of Policy & Research, policy and research staff, fellows, and contractors such as a web developer, PR agency, and a graphic designer. The person in this position may supervise 1-2 staff and/or students.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and 6-8 years of experience in editorial, journalism, public policy, communications, public relations, think tanks, philanthropy, advocacy, or a related field required (or equivalent combination of education and work experience)
  • A strong mix of editorial judgment, writing and editing expertise, strategic thinking, and project management
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: poverty, public benefits, care, tax policy, housing, or good jobs
  • Exceptional writer and editor with a sharp eye for detail and a strong sense of voice, structure, tone, and audience
  • Comfortable translating technical, academic, and/or policy-heavy work into clear, compelling, and accessible products, e.g., publications, op-eds, events, speeches, and presentations
  • Skilled at developmental editing and helping others sharpen arguments, framing, and narrative flow
  • Strategic thinker who can synthesize complex ideas, identify patterns across issue areas, and bring clarity and structure to ambiguity
  • Experienced with writing and editing about racial equity, structural barriers, and economic inequities with care, nuance, and attention to language, lived experience, and evolving norms
  • Highly organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple projects and competing timelines
  • Curious, collaborative, and energized by working across teams and disciplines
  • Comfortable collaborating with researchers and policy experts and familiar with policy, think tank, philanthropic, media, and/or advocacy ecosystems
