Job Summary

AEP is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Data Scientist or Data Scientist Senior to join our Supply Forecasting team. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining advanced forecasting models, conducting economic and variance analysis, and delivering actionable insights to support strategic decision-making around our generation and market simulation projections. Other duties include intermediate analysis on various data types to uncover hidden patterns and unknown correlations to support business and management decisions. The ideal candidate will blend strong technical skills with business acumen to support regulatory filings, operational planning, and corporate initiatives.

Job Description

What You'll Do:

  • Forecasting & Modeling: Develop and maintain industry leading econometric and time series models that support regulatory filings and corporate planning.

  • Regulatory Support: Contribute to reports and analysis used in regulatory filings such as base cases, fuel filings, capacity resource plans, and securitization filings.

  • Variance Analysis: Assist in preparing unit dispatch and market variance analyses to measure performance and support corporate strategies.

  • Industry Research & Analysis: Conduct periodic studies and monitor industry trends relevant to AEP's service territory to inform planning and strategic decision-making around our generation fleet.

  • Data Collection & Management: Gather and manage data related to unit dispatch, fuel prices, power prices, and economic indicators to support forecasting and analysis. Create and maintain database tables to support data storage, retrieval, and reporting needs.

  • Visualization & Reporting: Create clear, compelling reports and visualizations to communicate findings to business partners and senior management.

  • Industry Awareness: Stay informed on industry trends, economic conditions, and regulatory developments affecting the AEP service territory.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with internal stakeholders to understand business needs and provide analytical support.

What We're Looking For:

Education Requirements:

-Bachelor's degree in economics, data science, mathematics, operations research, statistics, computer science or related technical field is required.

Experience Requirements:

-2 years of relevant work experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered. (Data Scientist)

-5 years of relevant work experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered. (Data Scientist Senior)

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Coding: experience and knowledge of statistical software packages such as R, Python, and /or SAS

  • Forecasting Expertise: Experience with forecasting through econometric modeling or time series analysis.

  • Visualization Tools: Proficiency with data visualization platforms such as Power BI, or similar tools.

  • Database Skills: Strong SQL skills and experience working with large relational databases. Experience working with Plexos, Aurora, or Encompass software also a plus.

  • Communication Skills: Ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.

  • Utility Industry Experience: Prior experience in the energy or utilities sector is a plus.
