A Manager of Configuration Data Management oversees the processes and systems used to track, control, and document changes to a company's products, systems, or software. Their responsibilities include ensuring that all configuration items are accurately identified, documented, and maintained throughout the product lifecycle. They manage teams that develop and enforce configuration management policies and procedures, coordinate with engineering and production departments, and ensure compliance with industry standards and customer requirements. Effective configuration data management helps prevent errors, ensures consistency, and supports quality control.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager configuration data management?

To thrive as a Manager Configuration Data Management, you need expertise in configuration management principles, data governance, project management, and a relevant degree in engineering, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management databases (CMDBs), PLM tools like Teamcenter or Windchill, and certifications such as CMII or PMP are commonly required. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication enable successful collaboration across engineering, production, and quality teams. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate tracking of product changes, regulatory compliance, and efficient delivery of complex projects.

How does a manager configuration data management typically interact with engineering and production teams?

Managers in Configuration Data Management (CDM) play a crucial role in ensuring that engineering changes and product information are accurately documented and communicated. They regularly collaborate with engineering teams to review design modifications and with production teams to ensure changes are implemented correctly on the manufacturing floor. Effective communication and coordination are essential, as the CDM manager acts as a bridge between technical documentation and practical execution. This role often requires organizing cross-functional meetings and maintaining up-to-date records to support seamless project execution.

Job description

This role plays a critical part in ensuring seamless data integration across ERP, CRM, and Engineering Data Management (PLM/EDM) systems, while defining and governing metadata standards, hierarchies, taxonomies, and data models for master and product data. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, business process understanding, and leadership experience within the manufacturing sector, particularly around Infor MDM or similar enterprise MDM/PIM tools.
Key Responsibilities
  1. MDM/PIM Strategy and Architecture
  • Define and lead the enterprise MDM/PIM strategy, ensuring alignment with corporate digital transformation goals.
  • Architect scalable MDM/PIM solutions that manage key master data domains: Product, Customer, Vendor, Material, and Location.
  • Drive data integration architecture between MDM/PIM and enterprise systems - including ERP (Infor LN, etc.), CRM (Microsoft Dynamics, etc.), and Engineering Data Management systems (PLM, EPDM).
  • Establish and maintain metadata standards, hierarchies, taxonomies, and data models to support consistent data representation across business functions and systems.
  • Define data flows, synchronization strategies, and governance mechanisms to maintain a single, authoritative source of truth.
  1. Solution Delivery and System Ownership
  • Manage full lifecycle delivery of MDM/PIM initiatives - from requirements gathering through design, development, testing, and deployment.
  • Oversee configuration, customization, and continuous improvement of Infor MDM (or equivalent MDM/PIM system).
  • Ensure high data quality, usability, and accessibility across integrated enterprise platforms.
  • Collaborate with IT and business teams to translate data requirements into technical designs and functional workflows.
  1. Data Governance and Business Process Design
  • Develop and implement data governance frameworks, including ownership models, approval workflows, and data stewardship processes.
  • Define and monitor data quality metrics, and implement corrective actions where needed.
  • Establish end-to-end business processes for the creation, validation, enrichment, and lifecycle management of master and product data.
  • Coordinate with supply chain, engineering, finance, and sales functions to align data processes and ownership.
  1. Integration, Analytics, and Data Enablement
  • Design and implement data integration frameworks connecting MDM/PIM systems to ERP, CRM, and Engineering Data Management tools using APIs, ETL, or middleware platforms (e.g., MuleSoft, Boomi, Infor ION).
  • Partner with BI and Analytics teams to make curated master data available for reporting, dashboards, and data-driven insights.
  • Ensure MDM and PIM architectures support data lineage tracking, metadata management, and downstream analytics platforms (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Snowflake).
  1. Leadership, Governance, and Change Management
  • Lead cross-functional teams to deliver enterprise MDM/PIM solutions and enhancements.
  • Provide thought leadership in master data governance, taxonomy management, and data architecture best practices.
  • Train and mentor business data stewards, process owners, and technical teams.
  • Drive stakeholder alignment and promote a culture of data accountability and ownership across the organization.

Qualifications & Experience
Education
  • Bachelor's, or master's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Management, or related discipline.

Required Experience
  • 8+ years of experience in Master Data Management (MDM), Product Information Management (PIM), or Data Architecture
  • Proven success implementing and managing MDM/PIM platforms - preferably Infor MDM, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of data integration across ERP, CRM, and PLM/Engineering Data Management systems within a manufacturing environment.
  • Expertise in metadata management, data modeling, hierarchy management, and taxonomy design for master and product data.
  • Experience with data governance frameworks, data quality management, and master data workflows.
  • Familiarity with data integration technologies (APIs, ETL, middleware, EDI, or Infor ION).
  • Solid understanding of product lifecycle data, BOMs, engineering change management, and supply chain master data.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with Infor CloudSuite, Infor LN, or related ERP environments.
  • Proficiency with SQL, XML, and data profiling tools.
  • Understanding of data privacy, security, and compliance regulations (GDPR, CCPA, etc.).
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum delivery methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills with excellent stakeholder communication.
