Job description

As our company continues to grow, we're looking for a motivated, analytical professional to join our finance team and help improve how we manage the financial performance of our construction projects.

This is a unique opportunity to work closely with our accounting team, project managers, Chief Operating Officer, and executive leadership while helping build the financial systems that support a growing business.

Position Summary

The Project Financial Analyst reports to the Director of Accounting and works closely with the Chief Operating Officer, project managers, and accounting team to support the financial management of our construction projects.

The primary responsibilities of this position include construction job costing, project forecasting, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, and project financial analysis.

This role plays a key part in preparing and maintaining accurate project financial information that supports monthly WIP reviews, management reporting, and strategic decision-making.

The successful candidate will help ensure project costs, revenue forecasts, equipment costs, and anticipated profitability are accurately reflected throughout the life of each project.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain the company's monthly Work-in-Progress (WIP) reports.
  • Support the Chief Operating Officer during monthly WIP review meetings by preparing project financial information, updating forecasts, and documenting revisions.
  • Work directly with project managers to review project budgets, actual costs, committed costs, billings, projected costs to complete, and anticipated project profitability.
  • Analyze project financial performance and identify potential cost overruns, margin erosion, billing issues, and financial risks.
  • Review labor, subcontractor, material, equipment, and other project costs to ensure they are properly captured and allocated.
  • Assist project managers in developing accurate cost-to-complete forecasts throughout the life of each project.
  • Reconcile WIP reports with job cost reports and accounting records.
  • Support accurate revenue recognition, overbillings, underbillings, and month-end financial reporting.
  • Track approved and pending change orders and evaluate their impact on project financial performance.
  • Assist with project setup, budgets, cost code management, and project closeout.
  • Support fleet and equipment cost tracking and ensure equipment ownership, maintenance, fuel, and repair costs are properly allocated to projects.
  • Develop reports and dashboards that provide leadership with clear visibility into project performance.
  • Recommend improvements to job costing, project reporting, and financial processes.
  • Become proficient in our ERP system (ComputerEase Cloud by Deltek) and help improve the quality and consistency of project financial reporting.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate enjoys solving problems, working with numbers, and collaborating with people across multiple departments.

You don't necessarily need to come from a traditional accounting background. We are open to candidates with experience in construction accounting, project management, project controls, cost controls, estimating, engineering, or construction operations.

If you've worked on construction projects and understand project budgets, forecasting, job costing, or financial reporting, we'd like to talk with you.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience in construction accounting, project management, project controls, cost controls, estimating, or construction operations.
  • Experience with construction job costing and project financial management.
  • Experience preparing or maintaining Work-in-Progress (WIP) reports is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of project budgets, cost codes, labor reporting, equipment costing, subcontract management, billing, and change orders.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with project managers, accounting personnel, and executive leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field is preferred but not required for candidates with equivalent construction experience.
  • Experience with ComputerEase Cloud by Deltek or similar construction ERP/accounting software is preferred.

What Success Looks Like

Successful candidates will become a trusted resource for both the accounting and operations teams.

Within your first year, you will help improve the accuracy of our monthly WIP reports, strengthen project forecasting, improve job costing, provide better financial visibility to project managers and leadership, and contribute to more informed business decisions across the company.
