Job description

Under general supervision, the Route Driver Crew Leader is responsible for operating all trucks and specialized equipment used in the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, yard debris, and materials used in composting operations and in the maintenance of composting facilities. This position will not be on an assigned route and will cover downed routes in all collection areas.
Distinguishing Characteristics: The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy and procedures. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures.
Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
• Completion of assigned route duties within scheduled work time.
• Operates various heavy specialized equipment as needed.
• Inspects assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure proper performance and safe operation; performs routine maintenance for assigned vehicle and equipment.
• Responsible for training new Route Drivers on all equipment operations.
• Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
• Operates all refuse and recycling trucks along designated routes; transports loads to various refuse, recycling, and composting stations.
• Responds to routine customer inquiries.
• Trains other Route Drivers
• Available to support all EWS Special Event related activities.
Marginal Duties:
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions : The Route Driver Crew Leader determines how to meet delivery schedules with available personnel. The incumbent determines whether assigned vehicles and equipment are in safe operating condition and whether any actual or potential safety hazards exist prior to operating. The incumbent operates equipment within the guidelines of the appropriate operator's manual and City and departmental policies. The incumbent determines appropriate methods to accomplish assigned work.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Proper operation and maintenance of all vehicles and equipment used in the collection of refuse, recycling, yard trimmings, and bulky waste; safety requirements and standards applicable to operating vehicles and equipment; appropriate safety equipment and procedures; applicable ordinances, regulations, and policies regarding the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, and yard debris; City of Plano streets and address locations.
Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating vehicles and equipment in accordance with safety policies, procedures, and regulations; completing basic mathematical calculations.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: Four (4) years of experience operating heavy equipment and refuse collection trucks. Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class "B" Commercial driver's license - may require Tanker endorsement.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions : Must possess mobility to work in and around City composting, recycling, and refuse facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on unimproved/improved surfaces or streets ; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when loading materials and completing maintenance. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
Employees work in and around buildings, streets, and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, dust, toxic waste, chemical, mechanical, and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
