CNC Programmer
AJM Packaging Corporation
Detroit, MI
Position Overview -
AJM Packaging Corporation, one of America's lead manufacturers of paper products, including paper plates, cups, bowls and bags, is seeking to add a CNC Programmer to our team in Detroit, MI. This role will develop, program, optimize, and execute CNC machining operations by translating 3D CAD models and technical drawings into accurate, efficient machine code while collaborating with engineering and production teams to meet quality and performance requirements.
Responsibilities & Duties -
  • Convert 3D CAD models (e.g., STP files) into fully functional CNC programs by importing, analyzing, and translating design data into machine-readable code using CAM software (Autodesk Fusion).
  • Create and modify CNC programs for milling, turning, and other machining operations.
  • Ensure accuracy in tool paths, machining strategies, and program optimization to meet engineering specifications and production requirements.
  • Collaborate with machinists and engineers to troubleshoot and improve machining processes.
  • Interpret drawings, blueprints, specifications, and design data to calculate dimensions, tool selection, machine speeds, and feed rates.
  • Configure, maintain, optimize, and operate CNC machinery to execute precise machining operations on metal or plastic components according to programmed specifications.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of programs in the language of a machines controller and store programs on media such as flash drives.
  • Determine reference points, machine cutting paths, or hole locations, and compute angular and linear dimensions.
  • Modify existing programs to enhance efficiency.
  • Perform test runs and first-piece inspections to validate program accuracy.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements -
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree preferred
  • 5-7 years of hands-on machining experience including setup and operation of CNC lathes & mills
  • 2-4 years of CNC programming experience
  • Proven experience using computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software, specifically Autodesk Fusion, for CNC programming and toolpath generation.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented or component-oriented development for CNC programming, including strong knowledge of G-code and M-code for machine control.
  • Strong background with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Be able to successfully manage multiple projects and tasks.

AJM was originally founded as a distributor of commercial paper, plastic and foil packaging products and related cleaning, janitorial and order processing supplies and equipment by three (3) Detroit area brothers operating out of a small warehouse in Detroit's Eastern Market.
