Job description
The Clinical Learning Resource Centre (CLRC) is a dynamic and highly collaborative unit dedicated to advancing excellence in healthcare education through simulation, innovation, and interprofessional learning. As a recognized leader in experiential education, the CLRC partners with learners, faculty, healthcare professionals, and community stakeholders to create meaningful learning experiences that strengthen clinical competence and patient care. The Manager role offers a unique opportunity to lead a talented team, shape the future of simulation-based education, and contribute to initiatives that have a lasting impact across programs, disciplines, and the broader healthcare system.
Primary Purpose: The Manager of the Clinical Learning Resource Centre (CLRC) provides strategic and operational leadership to advance simulation-based and interprofessional learning opportunities for University of Saskatchewan (USask) Academic Health Sciences learners. In collaboration with partner colleges and programs, this position supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs and strategic initiatives, while leading staff and overseeing the daily operations of the CLRC. The Manager also ensures the effective management and integration of simulation technologies and resources, including high-fidelity manikins, task trainers, and related equipment, to support innovative learning experiences and optimize educational outcomes.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Associate Director, the Manager is responsible for overseeing the daytoday operations of the CLRC, working collaboratively with the other CLRC Manager, and a primary focus on supporting Health Sciences practical experience curricula. This role includes supervision of CLRC staff and oversight of all simulated learning activities within the Manager's designated areas. The Manager is expected to ensure the unit operates smoothly and efficiently, delivering exceptional service to all partners.
This multifaceted role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain effective partnerships across the university and with external stakeholders. The Manager plays a key role in supporting and implementing experiential learning initiatives that leverage innovative pedagogical approaches, simulation technologies, and evidence-based methods. The role requires a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment in managing confidential and sensitive information.
The work environment is fastpaced and demanding, with frequent interruptions, shifting priorities, tight deadlines, and multiple concurrent issues requiring attention. The position also involves light to moderate physical tasks. This is a fulltime role that may require flexible hours, including occasional evening and weekend work, and calls for creative thinking, innovative problemsolving, and a strong commitment to delivering an exceptional student experience.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
Administration:
- Oversees and manages assigned simulationbased educational activities within the CLRC.
- Works with the financial team to ensure adherence to established CLRC budgets.
- Collaborate with CLRC partners to develop and implement simulation experiences aligned with course and program objectives.
- Manages the full employee lifecycle for direct reports, including recruitment, training, development, engagement, performance management, and discipline up to and including dismissal.
- Supports oversight of SP Program recruitment, training standards, performance expectations, and quality assurance.
- Contributes to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and practice standards informed by emerging research and best practice.
- Establishes and monitors metrics and benchmarks for events; collects and analyzes data and recommends improvements.
- Supports the Associate Director, Clinical Learning Services with business operations, scheduling, budgeting, market research, promotion, partnership development, and staff and faculty development.
- Collaborates with USask Academic Health Sciences to plan, coordinate, execute, and evaluate events that support strategic goals and priorities.
Operations:
- Manages day-to-day operations of assigned areas, including inventory management, equipment maintenance and repair, software and equipment updates, room scheduling, staff workflow, simulation planning, and lab set-up/take-down.
- Works with faculty and the CLRC team to plan, prepare, implement, and support simulation activities, with a primary focus on the effective operation, functionality, and readiness of simulation equipment and related technologies.
- Coordinates the simulation centre schedule, including simulations, OSCEs, and classroom use, ensuring efficient resource allocation, equipment availability, compliance with scheduling policies, and avoidance of conflicts.
- Oversees staff responsible for preparing spaces, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment, coordinating preventative maintenance, and implementing required hardware and software upgrades.
- Recommends equipment, supplies, software solutions, and technology enhancements, anticipating changes in simulation technology, clinical practice standards, regulatory requirements, and program needs.
- Ensures adherence to biomedical licensing requirements, manufacturer specifications, safety standards, and organizational policies and procedures related to the operation, maintenance, calibration, and use of simulation equipment and technologies.
- Maintains records related to equipment inventory, servicing, repairs, warranties, licensing, and inspections.
People and Organizational Development:
- Champion simulated and interprofessional activities to our health science partners.
- Provides oversight and support for training initiatives for simulation users, including faculty development on simulation, SP utilization, and debriefing methodologies.
- Supports faculty in developing and implementing simulated educational activities, including scenario design and SP recruitment.
- Provides feedback to support continuous improvement in the SP and Healthcare Professional training processes.
- Promotes ongoing professional development for staff to stay current with simulation and interprofessional education trends.
- Networks with provincial, national, and international colleagues to share and adopt best practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Post-secondary education in a health care-related field is preferred. Certifications and/or post graduate degrees in leadership and/or administration would be an asset. Experience: Minimum of five years of progressive leadership experience in a fastpaced, multidisciplinary environment. Demonstrated competency (three to five years) in adult immersive teachinglearning approaches or other experiential education methods. Experience with program development, performance evaluation, human resources and financial management, policy and procedure development, and team building are essential.
Skills: Performance competencies include leadership and vision, change leadership, relationship building, communication, results orientation, and personal effectiveness. The successful candidate will demonstrate strengths in strategic program development and management; experience in and commitment to interprofessional health sciences education; the ability to build collaborative interprofessional relationships; an understanding of healthcare practice and evidence-informed teaching and learning strategies in simulated healthcare environments; strong human resource management and decision-making skills; and the ability to work independently with initiative, flexibility, creativity, and innovation.
