The Regional Clinical Engineer is part of Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering’s regional engineering team and plays a key role in advancing the safe and effective management of medical devices used across hospitals in the Lower Mainland. Working closely with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders, this role supports a wide range of engineering activities, including but not limited to incident investigations, medical device alert and recall management, technical risk assessments, capital planning, medical device implementation projects, planned maintenance program management, and quality improvement initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity for a clinical engineer who is passionate about improving patient care through technology, innovation, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration in a dynamic healthcare environment.


Reporting to the Regional Clinical Engineering Leader and/or the Senior Clinical Engineer as applicable, the Clinical Engineer:

  • applies recognized technology management principles to provide leadership and management for projects
  • strategic planning, resource planning and utilization, capital equipment planning, risk management, patient safety and quality improvement
  • assisting with the management and direction for a designated area(s) within the lower mainland Biomedical Engineering Department such as (a) Risk Management (a) Equipment Planning, (b) Information Technology, (c) Projects & Systems, (d) Research & Development/Education or (e) Safety for individual health authorities and Providence Health Care (PHC)

Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Applied Science with a focus in Biomedical Engineering plus three (3) to five (5) years' recent engineering/technical experience including experience in Biomedical Engineering in a hospital environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Current registration or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
Skills and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles.
Sound knowledge of CSA standards, the Canadian Electrical Code and Health Canada regulations.
Demonstrated knowledge of health sciences.
Advanced analytical and problem solving skills.
Proficiency in the operation of a broad range of electronic test equipment and medical instruments.

Your day to day:

  • Assists with the planning and management of service deliverables for designated areas within the department.
  • Participates in the development and revision of LMBME and the Organizations' policies and protocols that deal with the safe use, management, and technical support of medical equipment technology, including conducting safety tests and training of clinical staff as required.
  • Consults and communicates directly with medical, nursing, and other administrative leaders on technical matters related to use of medical equipment technology in clinical practice - promoting and reinforcing strong linkages with medical, clinical and other support services teams
  • Coordinates and manages the planning, transition and implementation of project activities intended to support clinical and support services stakeholders by: assessing needs and priorities, establishing procedures, defining objectives and outcomes, coordinating project related activities and implementing strategies for success
  • Coordinates risk management activities for the department by establishing and reviewing risk management protocols such as incident investigations, hazard and recall monitoring, etc., and ensures that appropriate actions are implemented.
  • Regularly monitors regulatory and standards organizations such as Health Canada, ECRI, CSA, etc. and ensures that this information is incorporated into the Organizations' risk management and patient safety strategies.
  • Coordinates and supervises the work of Biomedical Engineering Technologists and other staff as it relates to various projects. Provides specific direction to all staff on issues such as Quality Improvement, Incident Investigation, Patient Safety, Device Hazard and Alert assessment and Capital Planning, etc.
  • Participates in the interview, selection and training of new employees. Assists in defining and implementing performance evaluations.
  • Participates in strategic planning for the department and assists the clinical services and the Organizations with strategic planning as it relates to medical technology.
  • Participates in the capital planning processes for the Organizations. As such, takes an active and significant role, sometimes including coordination, in the assessment of needs and priorities, the development of specifications, and the evaluation, selection, and implementation of technologies. Also actively participates in the ongoing and annual medical technology planning for the Organizations. Liaises with vendors and manufacturers.
