Position Summary
The Associate Director serves as a key technical leader within the Application Development team, responsible for designing, building, testing, and documenting modern line-of-business applications that support the strategic and operational needs of the UCLA School of Law. The role conducts in-depth systems and technical analysis; leads application and database design; and contributes to the development of secure, scalable, performant, and maintainable solutions across Law School environments. The incumbent is an experienced full-stack engineer proficient in current client-side frameworks and server-side development, with deep expertise in the .NET ecosystem. The position partners closely with vendors, campus technology units, and internal departments to evaluate needs, recommend solutions aligned with Law School technology standards, and guide the selection and integration of new applications. Responsibilities include overseeing the maintenance, enhancement, and customization of client-facing and back-end components; developing new systems and features; and modernizing existing applications to improve performance, usability, and long-term sustainability. The Associate Director ensures that all development follows established engineering practices, including secure coding standards, testing, and the use of approved development toolsets.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years Professional experience designing and building web-based business applications using the Microsoft development ecosystem and at least one modern JavaScript framework such as React, Angular, or Vue. (Required)
  • Minimum of 3 years Experience designing, implementing, and optimizing relational databases (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL) with a strong understanding of data modeling and performance. (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience building, documenting, and consuming RESTful APIs and service integrations within distributed application environments. (Required)
  • Proficiency with modern source control and DevOps toolchains, including Git-based repositories and automated build, test, and deployment pipelines. (Required)
  • Proven ability to rapidly research, evaluate, and adopt new technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices in response to evolving organizational needs. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of Windows and macOS operating systems and standard productivity platforms such as Microsoft 365. (Required)
  • Experience developing solutions within one or more serverless or cloud-native ecosystems (Azure Functions, AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions). (Required)
  • Familiarity with non-relational and distributed data platforms such as MongoDB or DynamoDB. (Required)
  • Understanding modern identity and access management standards, including OAuth, OAuth2, and OpenID Connect. (Required)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting detailed technical analysis, including system evaluation, documentation, requirements specification, and solution recommendations aligned with organizational standards. (Required)
  • Knowledge of the modern application development lifecycle and contemporary project management methodologies, including Agile or related frameworks; familiarity with tools such as Atlassian Jira for workflow and backlog management. (Preferred)
  • Experience working within a Higher-Ed IT environment, with an understanding of academic processes, governance, and stakeholder needs. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work effectively in team environments and to build strong, collaborative relationships with users, colleagues, and vendors from diverse technical and professional backgrounds. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, adapt to shifting priorities, and maintain momentum in a fast-paced, iterative development environment. (Required)
