What is a manager animal behavior?

Manager Animal Behavior positions are roles responsible for overseeing teams and programs that study, assess, and improve the behavior and welfare of animals, often in zoos, shelters, laboratories, or research facilities. These managers develop and implement animal behavior protocols, supervise animal behaviorists and trainers, and collaborate with veterinarians and other staff to ensure optimal animal care. They also analyze behavioral data, create enrichment plans, and may be involved in staff training and public education. The goal is to enhance animal well-being, support research, and sometimes improve adoption rates or conservation outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager animal behavior?

To thrive as a Manager of Animal Behavior, you generally need a degree in animal behavior, zoology, or a related field, along with extensive experience working with animals and supervisory experience. Familiarity with behavioral assessment tools, data analysis software, and sometimes certification from organizations like the Animal Behavior Society are typical requirements. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you effectively manage teams and collaborate with veterinarians, trainers, and researchers. These qualifications ensure the humane treatment of animals, effective team management, and the successful implementation of behavior modification programs.

What are some common challenges faced by a manager animal behavior, and how can they be addressed?

A Manager of Animal Behavior often faces challenges such as managing diverse animal temperaments, ensuring staff are properly trained in animal handling, and balancing animal welfare with organizational goals. Addressing these requires strong communication skills, the ability to develop and implement training programs for staff, and staying updated on the latest behavioral enrichment practices. Job description

Highland Park Pet Hospital, centrally located in Sugarhouse, is seeking a part-time or full-time associate veterinarian to join our rapidly growing small animal hospital, opened in 2022. We are a locally owned, integrative general practice built on a relationship-based approach – emphasizing client education, compassionate care, transparent communication and a commitment to practicing high-quality, evidence-based medicine. We are proud to be one of only a few hospitals in Utah that ethically opposes declawing cats.

We welcome associates who bring their own clinical passions and special interests. We’re looking for a doctor who wants to help shape the future of our hospital - and in return, we are deeply committed to supporting your personal and professional growth. Our caseload includes a high volume of dentistry and behavior so special interests in either of these areas would be a HUGE plus! That said, if you have another niche that you’re passionate about, we are excited to explore how we can grow it within our hospital.

Our facility is equipped with digital radiography, dental radiography and in-house lab equipment. Nearly half of our patients meow, so experience or interest in feline medicine will serve our associate well, though it is not a requirement. We are committed to low-stress, fear-free techniques because we believe honoring the human-animal bond starts with minimizing anxiety for pets and their people.

We utilize our veterinary technicians at a high level. Our doctors are supported by a skilled technical team, allowing them to focus on diagnostics, surgery, case management and client communication - not tasks that can be appropriately delegated. This team-based approach supports excellent medicine and long-term sustainability. We believe practicing good medicine takes time, communication, and teamwork, and we structure our workflow to support that.

Our culture matters. We’ve built an environment where respect is non-negotiable, bad behavior is not tolerated and people genuinely enjoy coming to work. We laugh, we swear, and we are not a “family” - we are colleagues who genuinely enjoy each other’s company but understand that you have your own life and family to get home to.

We believe supporting our team is essential to practicing good medicine. Our benefits include:

  • $100-150,000 base salary with production
  • Paid time off
  • Annual CE allowance + all licensing fees paid
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance
  • Retirement benefits with employer match
  • Generous personal pet care discounts
  • No weekends, emergency or on-call hours

We prefer candidates with at least 2-3+ years of clinical experience but will consider exceptional new graduates who align with our culture and standards of care.
