Manager Animal Assisted Therapy information

What does a manager of animal assisted therapy do?

A Manager of Animal Assisted Therapy oversees programs that use animals to help improve the physical, emotional, or social well-being of clients in settings like hospitals, schools, or therapy centers. They coordinate therapy sessions, supervise staff and therapy animals, ensure compliance with regulations, and develop program goals. Additionally, they may train staff, evaluate program effectiveness, and liaise with healthcare professionals to integrate animal-assisted interventions into treatment plans.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager of animal assisted therapy, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager of Animal Assisted Therapy, you need expertise in animal behavior, therapeutic program management, and a relevant degree such as social work, psychology, or animal sciences. Familiarity with animal-assisted therapy certification programs, safety protocols, and record-keeping systems is typically required. Leadership, strong communication, and empathy are crucial soft skills for coordinating teams and engaging clients. These competencies ensure effective, ethical therapy programs that enhance client outcomes and maintain animal welfare.

What are some common challenges faced by a manager of animal assisted therapy, and how can they be navigated?

One common challenge for a Manager of Animal Assisted Therapy is ensuring the well-being and safety of both therapy animals and clients during sessions. Balancing administrative duties with direct program oversight can also be demanding, as the role often requires managing staff, training volunteers, and maintaining compliance with regulatory and ethical standards. Effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including therapists, medical professionals, and animal handlers, are crucial for program success. Building strong protocols for animal care, ongoing training, and clear documentation helps navigate these challenges and foster a supportive environment for all participants.

Job description

Join our volunteer community! Animal Assisted Therapy Teams Needed.

EvergreenHealth Hospice is one of the few remaining not-for-profit Hospice services in the region. We support patients and their families all over King and Snohomish counties. We rely on caring neighbors to support our community.

Hospice Animal Assisted Therapy teams provide unconditional love and support to our patients, families and staff. Many of the patients you will see are missing their own animal and are delighted by the surprise of a visiting therapy dog team.

All volunteers complete a comprehensive Hospice Core Training and specialized position training.

Animal Assisted Therapy teams receive training on how to navigate the hospice environment, how to enter patient rooms, and how to support patients and families throughout the visit. Teams are supported by both our Volunteer Coordinators and our Bereavement Coordinators, if needed.

Ongoing hospice education, support meetings, and friendly volunteer gatherings are offered throughout the year.
