About the Job
General Summary of Position
Assists the anesthesia provider with surgery patients. Prepares operating rooms for surgery. Provides technical services and assists in operating room as directed.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs support duties for anesthesia and nursing during all emergency situations in the OR suites endoscopy L&D OR suites PACU and interventional radiology.
  • Responsible for routine supply ordering and maintaining adequate inventory at all times. Checks for expired items and removes as needed on a weekly basis.
  • Coordinates all supply/Inventory actions with the OR Material Coordinator.
  • Assists the anesthesia provider in preparing patients for anesthesia.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Discards used disposable anesthesia equipment in the appropriate manner.
  • Maintains adequate and up-to-date drug inventory daily and discards out-of-date drug inventory daily.
  • Replenishes anesthesia drug supplies daily. Monitors operating rooms and obstetrics daily and before during and after each patient. Ensures that the necessary anesthesia equipment and supplies are available.
  • Opens sterile supplies and sets up for procedures. Cleans room equipment and stretchers using proper asepsis techniques. Cleans and prepares room between procedures and after terminal cleaning.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Transports blood and specimens to and from laboratory and patients to and from OR/PACU/Recovery as needed.
  • Routinely checks condition of equipment such as blood pressure cuff stethoscope pressure infusers and laryngoscopes and replaces or repairs defective parts. Maintains and cares for equipment and supplies. Documents maintenance and repairs. Contacts hospital supply contractors for major repairs or replacement of anesthesia equipment.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • High School Diploma or GED required
    Experience
    • 1-2 years work experience as an anesthesia technician required
    Licenses and Certifications
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
    • ASATT - Certified Anesthesia Tech preferred
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
    • Ability to read write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
    • Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission values and commitment to compliance with all federal state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.
    • Exhibits professionalism courtesy and excellent customer service while interacting with patients guests and co-workers.
    • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
    • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
    • Working knowledge of aseptic techniques.
    • Ability to effectively convey written and verbal information follow direction perform simple mathematical calculations correctly respond to emergency situations appropriately adapt hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the department and to effectively function as a member of a collaborative team.
    • Ability to organize and manage time effectively setting appropriate priorities.
    • Knowledge skill and ability to comply with Joint Commission and OSHA standards.
