Job description

Radiologic Technologist

The primary purpose of the position is to perform mammographic examinations according to current standards of care and also perform certain routine radiological examinations as described in the Radiology Department Policies and Procedures. Incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Radiology Technologist Supervisor.

Work is performed in an ambulatory and non-ambulatory clinic and hospital environment. There is common exposure to radiation, infectious communicable disease, potentially hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials. Incumbent must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as required and requested. Special attire may be required as protection against infection and radiation.

Work requires long periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires recurring bending, lifting, stretching and positioning patients. Ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds is required to perform positional duties. Incumbent must be able to cope with constant changes in a stress-laden environment.

Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:

  1. Organizes tasks to maintain compliance and accreditation with the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR).
  2. Responsible for the proper identification of patients, including correct patient medical record number and proper identification of all radiographs/mammographs.
  3. Solicit and record patient clinical history relevant to the mammographic examination.
  4. Document location of lumps, scars, moles, etc. by means of radiopaque markers on breast and/or diagram on clinical information sheet.
  5. Review each mammography/x-ray request to determine appropriate equipment needed for the completion of the exam.
  6. Conducts mammography study by positioning breasts; adjusting compression mechanisms; instructing patient; adjusting equipment controls to set exposure factors.
  7. Evaluate images to ensure diagnostic quality.
  8. Communicate and relay patient information to radiologist as needed.
  9. Responsible for the cleanliness of work area and equipment assigned.
  10. Performs required duties in tech and office area as needed.
  11. Keep current on the latest technical literature and evaluate new procedures and techniques for the purpose of recommending them to the Director of Radiology.
  12. Responsible for maintaining professional licensures, certifications/registrations and required continuing education as mandated by ARRT.
  13. Regular attendance is required.
  14. Performs other duties as required.
