Computer Specialist/Team Lead - part-time/28 hrs per week

This position assists in the design, maintenance, and management of all CTL technical hardware and software in a high availability 24/7 environment (includes Testing Services). This includes server, workstation, network, printer, scanner, and all specialty hardware. It also includes software support such as database management, systems administration, website design and management, and systems administration software development (such as Testing Services administrative system).

What you'll be doing in this position

This position performs the following for both the CTL and Testing Services operations:

Systems Management: Assists to plan, configure, deploy, and maintain networks, printers, and servers.


Assists in assuring:

All point of service systems are in full operational state during business hours

Purchase, installation, upgrade of servers as needed (Linux, Windows, and OS X)

Management of users, access, and files

Daily monitoring of logs and system events to identify and resolve potential problems

Coordination of physical and infrastructure logistics during final exam periods

Maintenance of system security and backup

Disaster recovery planning

Troubleshoot and resolve problems as they arise in a 24/7 environment

Hardware and Software Management: Assists to acquire, install, and maintain desktop computing hardware.

Evaluate specific needs and acquire appropriate hardware and software (including for technology-heavy specialties such as graphic design, video editing, animation, web design and/or hosting, academic assessment, etc.).

Track usage, wear, repair, replacement, upgrades, licensing of hardware and/or software.

Identify needs, make purchases, within allocated budget.

Work with various vendors and service providers to maintain and repair equipment.

Maintain all patches and security fixes on all installed software, computers, printers, and servers.

Troubleshoot and resolve problems as they arise in a 24/7 environment

May act as liaison for IT-related projects between CTL and campus as assigned.

Contribute as requested on IT projects with other entities on campus

Pass along IT information to CTL employees (i.e., virus alerts, service interruptions, new or changed services or products, potential problems, etc.).

Where advisable, assists to design/create/support ancillary website and/or applications.

In collaboration with others, facilitate center's operations through the development of websites or other inter-system communications.

Design schemas and create new databases as required for new websites.

Perform and verify daily enterprise backups.

Program queries as needed to export data to usable reports or to meet other requirements.

Manage users and optimize databases as needed.

Maintain change control documentation.

Troubleshoot and resolve problems as they arise in a 24/7 environment.

Train and help CTL employees on use of technology

Support student employees who develop content using content management systems

Consult with, advise, and mentor other CTL employees on IT-related needs as assigned.

Advise department of ways in which emerging technology could make them more proficient.

Work with designers and programmers on new technologies and ways to integrate them into CTL projects/products.

Mentor and supervise student employees

Engage in professional development.

Stay current in all computer and best practices

What qualifies you for this role

Minimum education/experience required:

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems or closely related discipline, with 1+ years of related experience; OR 2+ years of directly related work experience.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:


Desktop Systems Administration (eventually required, but can be through on-the-job training)

  • Ability to train and help employees on the use of hardware and equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate IT projects.
  • Broad understanding of all core elements of desktop computing including hardware and operating systems software, desktop imaging and remote management technologies.
  • Experience with Linux desktop deployment and maintenance.
  • Experience with System imaging and deployment.
  • Experience in supporting Creative Suite software, and video and animation editing technologies.
  • Broad understanding of core business software, email, and collaboration tools (i.e., Microsoft Office, etc.).
  • Experience as a supervisor of services and support personnel.
  • Experience managing budgets, inventory, and equipment.
  • Ability to analyze needs, source equipment, and implement solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications.
  • Ability to build relationships and work with teams.

Server Systems Administration (eventually required, but can be through on-the-job training)

  • Experience in the design, specification, installation, maintenance, and administration of mixed-platform computer systems in an extended enterprise-class computing environment with 24/7 maintenance of such systems.
  • Applied knowledge of system administration principles and practices including installing, configuring, and supporting enterprise hardware and software.
  • Experience managing Linux servers, including shell scripting.
  • Experience with web servers and webhosting services, specifically Apache and MySQL.
  • Experience with server virtualization technology. Specifically, VMware vSphere management experience (VM configuration, provisioning, deployment, migration, and management).
  • Server software installation and maintenance, such as:
    • Linux OS (Ubuntu, and RedHat distributions)
    • DNS and Active Directory
    • Apache, Tomcat
    • MySQL and PostgreSQL
    • Network printing
  • Experience in data backup and replication technologies
  • Willingness to be on-call after hours to resolve urgent problems.

Pay Grade: 52

Typical Starting Pay: $31.25-$40.50/hr

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate's job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
