Job description

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE 

Millwright Superintendent provides onsite leadership and cost control oversite for all union millwright activities.  Such work may occur within industrial facilities such as manufacturing plants, power generation sites, refineries, food processing plants, and heavy industrial environments as well as general commercial facilities. The role requires 2-5 years of experience in the construction or industrial field, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage a team.  In addition, this role is responsible for reviewing project scopes, developing estimates, and independently executing self-perform work from planning through field completion.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead and supervise millwright crews performing installation, maintenance, and repair of light industrial equipment.

• Plan and coordinate daily work activities including manpower, tools, equipment, and materials.

• Oversee installation and schedule.

• Ensure compliance with industrial safety standards including OSHA, site-specific rules, and lockout/tagout procedures.

• Interpret and apply technical drawings including P&IDs, schematics, and mechanical blueprints.

• Conduct jobsite inspections and quality checks to verify precision, alignment, and adherence to specifications.

• Collaborate with project managers, project superintendents, and contractors to maintain schedules, resolve issues, and support project planning.

• Document labor hours, progress, and material usage for reporting and cost control.

• Mentor apprentices and journeymen to develop skill levels and maintain workforce capability.

PRECONSTRUCTION & SELF PERFORM CAPABILITIES 

• Review project documents, drawings, and specifications to define millwright scope of work and identify risks or gaps.

• Develop detailed labor, equipment, and material estimates for self-performed millwright work.

• Participate in bid reviews, constructability assessments, and scope development with project teams.

• Build work plans, sequencing strategies, and execution approaches for complex installations or shutdowns.

• Directly lead and run work in the field, taking full ownership of productivity, cost, schedule, and quality outcomes.

• Track and manage productivity against estimate, adjusting crews and methods to maintain budget and schedule targets.

• Coordinate procurement and staging of materials and specialty equipment required for self-performed scopes.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS 

• Extensive millwright experience in industrial environments such as manufacturing, energy, food & beverage, or heavy process facilities.

• Strong leadership and crew management skills with the ability to direct multiple teams.

• Expert knowledge of industrial mechanical systems including rotating equipment, hydraulics, pneumatics, and material handling systems.

• Proficiency with precision measurement and alignment tools such as laser alignment systems, micrometers, and dial indicators.

• Ability to read and interpret complex technical documents including OEM manuals and engineered drawings.

• Strong communication and problem-solving abilities for coordinating with clients, contractors, and internal teams.

• Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance in high-risk industrial environments.

ESTIMATING & EXECUTION STRENGTHS 

• Proven ability to develop accurate labor and productivity-based estimates for millwright work scopes.

• Strong understanding of cost control, production tracking, and field-driven financial performance.

• Experience independently managing and executing self-performed work from planning through completion.

• Ability to evaluate constructability and drive efficient installation methods.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

• Journeyman Millwright certification or equivalent.

• Experience supervising industrial shutdowns or turnarounds.

• Familiarity with project management software and digital reporting tools.

• Additional training in rigging, welding, or crane operations.

• Prior experience in a dual role (field leadership plus estimating or preconstruction support).
