Job description

Landscape Maintenance Laborer

The Landscape Maintenance Laborer is responsible for performing a variety of landscape and grounds maintenance duties to maintain the appearance, health, and overall condition of residential and commercial properties. This position uses hand tools, power equipment, and landscaping machinery to complete routine maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming, edging, planting, watering, digging, raking, sod installation, and the installation and care of trees, shrubs, foliage, flowers, and other landscape materials. The Landscape Maintenance Laborer works under the direction of a supervisor or crew leader and assists in ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company quality standards.

Job Functions

  • Perform landscape maintenance, groundskeeping, and basic property maintenance duties.
  • Operate landscape equipment and machinery, including mowers, tractors, blowers, edgers, weed eaters, and pruning saws.
  • Mow, trim, and edge lawns using appropriate equipment and tools.
  • Maintain established lawns through mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, dethatching, and trimming or edging around flower beds, walkways, and walls.
  • Utilize hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, hedge trimmers, brush trimmers, and axes to perform landscape maintenance tasks.
  • Prune and trim trees, shrubs, and hedges using shears, pruners, and chainsaws.
  • Collect and remove litter, debris, and landscape waste from work areas.
  • Water lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, and plants using hoses, portable sprinkler systems, watering cans, or other irrigation methods.
  • Maintain flower beds by trimming, picking flowers, weeding, and performing general upkeep.
  • Rake, mulch, and compost leaves and other organic materials.
  • Plant seeds, bulbs, flowers, grass, ground covers, trees, shrubs, and other landscape materials using appropriate gardening tools.
  • Apply mulch to landscape areas to protect plants and improve appearance.
  • Sweep walkways, sidewalks, and other hardscape areas to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on groundskeeping equipment and tools.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Work effectively as part of a landscape maintenance crew to complete assigned tasks efficiently and according to company standards.
  • Perform all other duties assigned in support of landscape maintenance operations.

Physical requirements include ground maintenance work performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The work can be repetitive and physically demanding, requiring frequent bending, lifting, carrying, digging, and shoveling. Employees are regularly required to stand, walk, crouch, stoop, kneel, and perform manual labor for extended periods. The position may also require the use of hand tools, power equipment, and landscape machinery while working on uneven terrain and in varying environmental conditions.

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior experience in landscape maintenance, groundskeeping, or landscape installation preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Must be dependable, punctual, and possess a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow directions from supervisors and crew leaders.
  • Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and direct sunlight.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work and complete assigned tasks safely and efficiently.

Required Licenses / Hours of Work

  • Valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record (MVR) preferred.
  • This position typically works Monday through Friday; however, start and end times may vary based on operational and organizational needs.
  • Overtime, weekend, or additional hours may be required as business needs dictate.
