What is a maintenance associate?

A maintenance associate is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the equipment needed to run a business. The setting for this job and the duties vary depending on the type of company. In a retail store, you may need to fix lighting and electrical systems, undertake cleaning duties, and install shelving. In a production facility, you need the skills and qualifications to maintain specialized equipment. In this career, your previous experience and training help you decide what setting works best with your skills and knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a maintenance associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Maintenance Associate, you need foundational knowledge in facility maintenance, basic repair techniques, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, maintenance management systems, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and reliability help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure equipment and facilities remain safe, functional, and efficient for daily operations.

What are some typical challenges maintenance associates face, and how can they effectively manage them?

Maintenance Associates often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting unfamiliar equipment, balancing urgent repairs with routine maintenance tasks, and adapting to shifting priorities in busy environments. Effective time management, clear communication with team members and supervisors, and a proactive approach to preventive maintenance can help address these challenges. Many employers also encourage ongoing skills training and collaboration with more experienced technicians to ensure Maintenance Associates stay up-to-date with best practices and safety protocols.

  • Keep the Dematic conveying systems running at peak performance on your shift

  • Grow into the go-to expert on our systems and help find ways to run them more efficiently

  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on building systems - plumbing, electrical, generator, HVAC, appliances, and more - or arrange for repairs when needed

  • Schedule and maintain regular testing and service for fire and life-safety systems, including inspections, extinguishers, sprinklers, alarms, emergency lighting, and smoke detectors

  • Keep the building looking sharp inside and out - touch-up painting, window and carpet cleaning, lighting, and more

  • Support associate moves, including furniture and equipment adjustments, and help with assembly and installation of equipment and furnishings

  • Coordinate contractors when a job calls for professional repair

  • Manage vendor relationships for landscaping, trash service, janitorial, and other facility services

  • Keep storage, warehouse/loading, and custodial areas organized and well maintained

  • Maintain accurate records on equipment and building systems

  • Maintain, service, clean, and properly store tools and equipment

  • Follow health and safety regulations, codes, and procedures, and use the right PPE for the job

  • Spot and report safety hazards to your supervisor and take action to fix them

  • Help keep the building, common areas, and grounds clean - tidy up spills, take out trash, and keep things looking good

What You Need
  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 3+ years of experience in a similar maintenance role

  • Comfortable using common tools to diagnose, repair, and resolve maintenance issues

  • Experience working with automated systems

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, inclusive environment

  • Strong attention to detail, with a track record of integrity and professionalism

  • A mindset geared toward improving how systems and processes run

  • Comfortable learning and navigating automated software

Pre-employment background check and drug screen required.
