ABOUT THE Division

General description
We are looking for an IT professional specializing in Mainframe z/OS systems programming who is ready to continue their career on a new IBM z17.   The team you would be joining consists of mid and senior level z/OS system programmers, who are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the mainframe.  This includes installing and maintaining z/OS system software and 3rd party software,  installing and testing mainframe software, working with teammates to ensure our mainframe is operating at peak performance, meeting with application developers and other teammates to resolve issues, meeting with coworkers on mainframe topics, and monitoring daily on-line mainframe system usage.

This position is a team of IT Professionals who are research oriented, open-minded, collaborative, adaptable, mainframe centric, and like to dig into issues. You would be a great fit for this role if you are self-motivated, a problem solver, resourceful, a good communicator, can work well with a team, and enjoys learning new technical advancements as it relates to our environment.  


Work Hours
Works hours are 8:00AM to 5:00PM, 40-hour week, Monday - Friday. Occasionally will work additional hours including weekends and holidays. Performs rotating on-call duties related to mainframe storage software and hardware support (24 x 7). Hours may change based on business need.

Teleworking may be considered if certain working conditions are met. The candidate must have permanent residency within the state of Texas and must be able to meet in office requirements, which can vary among different sections (i.e. report to office 1 day/month, 1day/week, etc.). Travel reimbursements are not provided for teleworking.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree.
Within the last 10 years:
Six (6) years' experience with IBM z/OS systems software and 3rd party vendor (System z) installation, maintenance, and support  
Experience with Mainframe software installation techniques and methodologies
Experience with JES3 or JES2, JCL and TSO/ISPF and SMPE
Experience with utility programs including: IDCAMS, IEBGENER, IEBCOPY, ADRDSSU, and SORT

Preferred Experience:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or related field
Experience with z/OS Db2 software installation, maintenance, and support
Experience with scripting languages including REXX, CLIST, and SAS
Experience with SMF, RMF, and WLM
Experience with Mainframe Change Control products (BMC Code Pipeline or equivalent)
Experience with BMC's Control-M or equivalent
Experience with RACF and zSecure Suite
Experience with Communication Server TCPIP, zOSMF, Coupling Facility

Substitutions:

One (1) additional year of the full-time minimum experience in IBM z/OS systems or Mainframe may substitute for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education with a maximum of 120 semester hours (four years).
 

In this role you will:

Mainframe Software Management 
Plans, installs, maintains, upgrades and administers IBM mainframe (System z) computer software. 
Modifies IBM mainframe software parameters, configuration values and options 
Installs corrective service to fix IBM mainframe software problems 
Tests mainframe software changes before moving them to a production environment. 
Manages the installation, maintenance, and support of the Db2. 
Manages the installation, maintenance, and support of Db2 related products and tools on z/OS platform. 
Follows agency standards, policies and guidelines. 
Documents all mainframe system software changes 
Provides advanced support to users and application developers in diagnosing and resolving mainframe software issues, including performancerelated problems 
Supports users and application developers by analyzing, implementing, and optimizing new and existing mainframe software features. 
Communicates any potential problems or benefits of mainframe software changes to management 
Performs rotating on-call duties related to z/OS and other mainframe software and hardware support (24 x 7)

Mainframe Systems Analysis and Research 
Researches and analyzes IBM mainframe (System z) problems, including mainframe software performance problems, and determines the best course of action to eliminate problems. 
Researches and analyzes mainframe software options and features. Determines which options are optimal for the installation of mainframe software products 
Ensures that installations are compatible with other mainframe software products and/or previous releases 
Verifies that hardware and software products function with any planned mainframe system hardware and software upgrades 
Researches and analyzes new products or mainframe software features to find more efficient or more cost-effective ways to support the business objectives and goals of the agency

Disaster Recovery 
Participates in the Disaster Recovery planning process as required 
Participates in the Disaster Recovery Hotsite exercises as required 
Updates Disaster Recovery plans and procedures as required

Work Management 
Initiates planning tasks for short- and long-range work assignments 
Participates in budget planning, researching and estimating costs, as needed. 
Prepares reports and provides information requested by management 
Identifies and coordinates tasks during an assignment 
Develops methods and plans to accomplish all tasks 
Keeps management informed of work progress and problems 
Performs other related duties as assigned 
Attends, overseas, and/or conducts training as assigned
