Job description

Position Title: Mainframe Developer (COBOL / DB2 / CICS)
Location: Hybrid - 3 Days Onsite per Week | Birmingham, AL
Position Status: Contract-to-Hire | 6 Months
Position Description:
We're seeking a Mainframe Developer to help support and modernize critical enterprise applications within our IBM mainframe environment. This role is ideal for a developer who enjoys solving complex business problems, maintaining high-performance systems, and contributing to modernization initiatives that connect legacy platforms with modern technologies.
What You'll Do
As a Mainframe Developer, you will:
  • Design, develop, test, maintain, and enhance applications in an IBM z/OS mainframe environment
  • Develop and support COBOL programs, JCL jobs, and batch-processing applications
  • Work with DB2 databases, including SQL development, data retrieval, and application integration
  • Support online transaction processing utilizing CICS
  • Analyze business requirements and implement application enhancements and fixes
  • Troubleshoot production incidents, batch failures, performance issues, and application defects
  • Review job logs, system messages, abends, and processing results to identify root causes and resolve issues
  • Participate in unit testing, integration testing, and regression testing activities
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, system specifications, and support procedures
  • Collaborate with developers, business analysts, QA teams, and infrastructure partners throughout the SDLC
  • Contribute to mainframe modernization, system integration, and digital transformation initiatives
  • Provide production support and participate in issue resolution efforts as needed
  • Follow coding standards, development best practices, and change-management processes

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in Mainframe Development, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Hands-on experience developing applications using COBOL
  • Experience with JCL (Job Control Language) and batch processing
  • Working knowledge of DB2 and SQL
  • Experience with or exposure to CICS transaction-processing environments
  • Understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities
  • Ability to read, maintain, and enhance existing legacy applications and codebases
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
